Lehigh Valley couldn't get through the Softball Carpenter Cup unscathed.
A 7-2 loss to Suburban One/Bicentennial early Thursday afternoon has forced Lehigh Valley to the "if" game of the 16-team, double-elimination, four-day tournament.
Lehigh Valley and Suburban One will meet again at approximately 2:30 with the winner taking home the championship. Suburban One, which beat Berks 7-6 in a morning game, will be playing its third game of the day in the extreme heat at Philly's FDR Park.
Suburban One is also playing without one of its coaches, Rick Torresani of North Penn, who was hit in the face by a batted ball in the first game and taken away in a stretcher to a local hospital. Indications were that Torresani was doing well.
Lehigh Valley couldn't overcome a six-run second inning by Suburban One. They sent 10 hitters the plate, collected five hits and received a walk and hit batter that forced in runs. The big blow was a three-run triple by Caroline Schoenewald.
Lehigh Valley got a run in the bottom of the first when Arastina Barry (Saucon Valley) reached on a bunt single, stole second and scored on a RBI single by Cassidy Sullivan (Emmaus).
Lehigh Valley scored again in the bottom of the seventh on a run-scoring single by Lizzie Deutsch (Nazareth).
Lehigh Valley had several other scoring opportunities, but left the bases loaded in the fourth, had two runners thrown out at the plate, and a runner caught between second and third for the final out of the game.
