Offseason Update: Drastic Changes Coming to PA Legion Baseball

FROM PA LEGION

While players and coaches around the state have been unwinding after a long and successful season for Pennsylvania American Legion Baseball, the groups that oversee the state and national programs have been hard at work. Over the next couple of summers, legion baseball in the state will phase in two rather drastic changes.

The national legion program has announced that beginning in the summer of 2015, legion baseball will again become exclusively available to high school aged players. This means that age-eligible players who have been able to play for their legion team after their first year of college will no longer be able to do so in a few years. The hope and belief is that allowing teams to only field their squads from high school aged students will give more opportunity to younger players and create less turnover and turmoil for teams across the country.

Also of note, the national legion passed an agreement that all states must participate under the same national legion rules. In the past, states or leagues within each state have taken liberty with such rules as courtesy runners, game re-entry, and the number of eligible players on each team. The new rule reiterates that programs must all compete under the same guidelines. States and leagues are still entitled to determine game length, which is at seven innings for most leagues but must be at nine innings for playoff games.

We had been alerted recently to a drastic rule change for PA Legion Baseball taking effect in 2013, and though the news has not yet been officially released by the state, several news outlets have posted information regarding it so we feel the need to confirm that information. It has been highly publicized (and scrutinized) that the national legion's bat standards had become confusing and daunting over the past few years. We heard many horror stories from across the state regarding what bats (BESR vs BBCOR and composite) were usable, and which weren't. It has been known for a while now that in 2012, legion baseball will adopt BBCOR bat rules that the NCAA adopted last year. This new change will bring continuity to the bat standards and also provide a great deal more safety to pitchers in harms way.

While that news is welcoming, PA Legion Baseball has decided to become one of the largest baseball organizations in the country to adopt even stricter bat rules. In 2013, PA Legion Baseball will be switching solely to wooden bats for all of its baseball games. The change will have many benefits to teams and players around the state. Wooden bats currently retail for 15-20% of the cost of a BBCOR metal bat. In addition, the new bats will provide a great deal of improvement in safety to the pitcher and surrounding players. PA Legion Baseball players will have many years of wooden bat hitting practice which should greatly aid in increasing the number of players drafted into the professional baseball ranks. Simply put, our state's players are being put in a situation where they will be ahead of the vast majority of high school hitters in the country. It should also be noted that state officials intend to make bat purchase agreements solely with Pennsylvania based company which will add jobs at a time when they are desperately needed. This is certainly not a http://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gifdecision that came easily, and is not one that will be without opposition. But as it stands, PA Legion Baseball will serve as a national leader in wooden bat usage, and for that, we should all be proud.

Talkin' baseball, Phillies baseball on "Calling All Sports" with Bill White and Mandy Housenick

FROM KEITH GROLLER

Two very special guests will make an appearance on this week's edition of "Calling All Sports"

Mr. Eatin' His Way Through Musikfest himself, Bill White, makes his "Calling All Sports" debut along with Phillies beat writer Mandy Housenick.

They'll talk about what's ahead for the Fightin's in what may be their most critical off season in years.

And you can bet I will get some Cardinals conversation in the mix as well.

We'll also reveal the latest high school football player of the week.

That's "Calling All Sports" seen at 8 p.m. Monday on Service Electric TV2 and Tuesday night at 8 on RCN-4.

Lehigh gets another offensive player of the week award, but it's not Chris Lum this time

FROM KEITH GROLLER

Another week and another Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week award for a Lehigh player.

But it's not quarterback Chris Lum (No.12 in the photo), who won the award five times in the team's first seven games,
This time it's junior Zach Barket (No. 34 in the photo) who had a career day at Colgate in a 45-25 win on Saturday.

The junior from Schuylkill Haven finished with 188 yards and two rushing touchdowns. He also snared a pair of passes for scores to become the first Lehigh player to score four touchdowns in a game since Pius X grad Eric Rath had four against Colgate in 2005.

It was also the second highest single-game total for a Lehigh player since 2001.

Despite the win over Colgate, Lehigh dropped one spot in each of the two major FCS polls, falling from No. 7 to No. 8 in The Sports Network/Fathead.com poll and sliding from No. 6 to No. 7 in the FCS Coaches Poll.

But Lehigh is now tied with Maine for the No. 1 spot in the latest ECAC/Meadowlands Lambert Cup poll for Eastern FCS programs.

CHARLIE SHEEN COMING TO FX

Happy Halloween! This could be scary for some, but former Two and a Half Men star Charlie Sheen will return to television, as we know... but now we have the full details! Starting in summer 2012, FX has acquired the new Sheen sitcom Anger Management, a new sitcom loosely based on Revolution Studios' 2003 hit comedy feature film of the same name. FX has ordered 10 episodes of Anger Management from Lionsgate-owned distributor Debmar-Mercury, led by Co-Presidents Mort Marcus and Ira Bernstein. Production on the sitcom will begin in early 2012 with comedy veteran writer-producer Bruce Helford (George Lopez, The Drew Carey Show) as executive producer and showrunner. It will be produced by Lionsgate Television, led by Television Group President Kevin Beggs and COO Sandra Stern; Joe Roth and Revolution Studios' Vince Totino; Sheen manager Mark Burg's production company, Evolution Management; and Ramon Estevez and Estevez Sheen Productions.

In success, FX will pick up an additional 90 episodes under a unique syndication model crafted by Debmar-Mercury for multiple Tyler Perry sitcoms and Revolution's and Ice Cube's Are We There Yet? The series will air exclusively on FX until the off-network episodes start airing in broadcast syndication in fall 2014 -- only two years after its debut, since it will have 100 episodes by then. Sheen will retain a significant ownership stake in the series inspired by the film, in which an anger management therapist, who may need more counseling than his patients, wreaks havoc on the lives of his patients through his unconventional methods.
FX already airs repeats of his former sitcom Two and a Half Men everyday and they do great ratings. We will have more on this for sure as we get closer to summer 2012, such as a premiere date and what day/time it will air. So come on back!

ABC Family has cast rising star Chelsea Kane (Dancing with the Stars Season 12) on a new sitcom pilot. She is probably best known for being a finalist on ABC's Dancing with the Stars and who stars in Disney Channel's Jonas as Stella and in the upcoming ABC Family movie musical, Elixir (working title), has been cast as Penny in the new half-hour comedy pilot, Baby Daddy. Kane joins previously announced cast including Derek Theler and Cameron Deane Stewart. This sitcom pilot, a half-hour comedy from executive producer Dan Berendsen, is about Ben (Stewart) who, in his 20s, becomes a surprise dad to a baby girl when she's left on his doorstep by an ex-girlfriend. Ben decides to raise the baby with the help of his mother, his brother, Danny (Theler), his best buddy and his close female friend, Penny (Kane), who is harboring a secret crush on him. Baby Daddy is a multi-camera comedy and is scheduled to shoot in front of a live audience in December in Los Angeles.

If the series is picked-up to series, it could be a possible companion to ABC Family's popular original sitcom Melissa & Joey. ABC Family has not found a good pairing with that sitcom yet, as State of Georgia (starring Raven Symone) was recently canceled by ABC Family due to low ratings, which is a bummer since it was decent. ABC Family also has another sitcom pilot that is in contention titled Village People, a multi-camera half-hour pilot centering on a single, high-powered career woman who adopts a baby from a teen mother -- whom she ends up caring for as well. We hope both make it to series but are hoping more for Baby Daddy so we can see Chelsea Kane blossom into a big star. Stay with us for further updates!

Sunday was a day Keith Groller will never forget, even if I'd like to

FROM KEITH GROLLER

Ever have one of those days that you'll one day laugh about, but it's no fun at all as you're going through it?

Had one of those on Sunday.

Hey, there are a lot of people dealing with the aftermath of that rare October snowstorm and will be for another couple of days. So I know I am not alone. And I know people are dealing with more adversity than me right about now, so I don't want to act like my world has ended.

But anyway to recap my Sunday:

It started nice enough in a quaint little town of Norwich, NY, where my wife and I stayed after the Lehigh-Colgate game. Beautiful day as we got going and if you like rolling hills and farmland, that drive from upstate New York back into northeastern Pennsylvania is gorgeous.

Stoppped at a Cracker Barrel in Binghamton and if there's one time you probably shouldn't visit a Cracker Barrel, it's the late morning or early afternoon on a Sunday.

Dinner was ok, but even my wife, who loves that gift shop shop adjacent to the restaurant at all Cracker Barrels, couldn't take the crowds.

That's more than ok with me, since I figure I will actually leave a Cracker Barrel with some money for a change, and we leave.

I am running low on gas, so I get off at one of those convenience centers on the turnpike.

But when I get off at the convenience area between Route 80 and the Mahoning Valley exit, I see lines so long that you'd swear they were giving out free gas at the Sunoco.

I looked at the gauge and figured I'd have just enough gas to make it home, so rather than what looks like at least a half-hour wait, I get right back on the turnpike and continue south.

Again, the sun's out and everything seems fine.

I get off at the Lehigh Valley exit and head for home.

But once I got off 309/78 at the Lehigh Street exit, I notice there are no stop lights. None there and none seemingly anywhere in either direction. And the McDonald's, the Wendy's, the South Mall, Subway, everything is closed.

It's like a ghost town, except for the confusion at each intersection. What should be a 10-minute drive becomes 20 because there are no stoplights and everyone is reluctant to go first at these four-way stops. Who knew I'd appreciate stoplights?

Even worse, is that I am still out of gas. One station is closed. No. 2 is closed and a third one, too. All of a sudden I am running out of gas stations, not to mention gas. I must be running on fumes by now. Talk abou panic central.

Thankfully, I finally find one -- a Hess -- on the outskirts of town.

Remember that 30-minute wait I so smartly avoided on the turnpike? Well, I traded that for a 45-minute wait here at Hess. But at least they had gas.

One crisis averted, we finally make it home after noticing that our town looks like a hurricane blew through it.

Unbelievable. Such beautiful trees and bushes seemingly ripped to shreds.

We get home and naturally, there's snow to shovel outside and an ice box inside. No power. Who knows how long it's been out?

We try to patch together a game plan, but I have to get to Philly for the Eagles game. Because of the search for gas, I am much later than I want to be.

Because of all the damaged trees all over the place, just getting back to the turnpike proves to be much more time-consuming and difficult than usual. All shortcut, out-of-the-way routes offer some kind of problem.

I'm still in great shape in terms of making the game on time, especially since I am armed with a parking pass that will get me right across the street from the Linc.

Except that when I get to the parking gate, my pass seems to do me no good. The guards keep waving me off, not even letting me plead my case.

I head all the way around to other side of the Wells Fargo Center -- bumper to bumper --- and get to another gate.

Thankfully, a kind-hearted guard lets me in. But I can't just park anywhere. I have to go to a certain section near the tailgaterrs.

Oh, what fun having plastered people who have probably been drinking since 9 a.m., if not earlier, stumbling in front of the car as I try to navigate through Party Central where they ignore my Honda Odyssey or treat me as if I am Rob Ryan or Tony Romo.

Somehow, some way, I get the car and myself through the tailgaters in one piece and find a spot.

I get settled inside the stadium, still more than an hour before kickoff. I realize, however, that in all of the tension, that I forgot my cell phone in the car.

No way I am going back out of the stadium and into the heart of the Eagles nest where they should be singing "High, Eagles, High" instead of "Fly, Eagles, fly".

I borrow a phone from a friend and call back home and my wife tells PPL says the power won't be back on until at least 9:30.

I say, great.

My wife says, no, that's 9:30 Monday night.

She says she's spending the night with her family in Whitehall.

I say, ok, please try to find me a room as close to home as possible.

She e-mails me back about two hours later and says, the best I can do is a Holiday Inn in Lansdale.

I say, great. And then she tells me the price.

So, here I am on this Monday morning. A bit shaken, a bit stirred, and much poorer, after that memorable Sunday, but at least I am warm and rested.

I just turned on the TV and saw that Cardinals manager Tony La Russa is retiring. Normally, this news would have me concerned, but until the power is restored back home, what happens with that job and Albert Pujols is not going to top the worry priority list today.

Nazareth Floral Design on South Main Street Closing

FROM ROSS NUNAMAKER

Nazareth Floral Design on South Main Street is closing and moving its merchandise to Donahoe Farms on East Lawn Road according to an article in the Express-Times.

The is really not a big surprise as the Donahoe's had purchased the store from the Little's in 2007 and it makes sense to operate from one location instead of two.

The article also notes the name will change to Nazareth Floral Design at Donahoe Farms.

Officials say October snowstorm's damage worse than Hurricane Irene

FROM THE EXPRESS TIMES

John Toner, of Lower Saucon Township, sought shelter for a while at a Starbucks. Michele Ryder, of Bethlehem, cleaned up trees felled by heavy snow. Melissa Dale, of Hanover Township, Northampton County, read books.

Those were the lives of the powerless Sunday after a massive October snowstorm swept through the Lehigh Valley and northwest New Jersey, depriving thousands of homes and businesses of electricity.

Scott Surgeoner, a spokesman for FirstEnergy, which includes Metropolitan Edison and Jersey Central Power & Light, said the damage was immense and widespread.

“The damage from this storm is more significant and severe than Hurricane Irene,” said Surgeoner.

Surgeoner said about 256,000 customers, nearly half served by the Reading-based utility, had lost power from Saturday.

It could be Friday before power is restored to some customers, he said.

As of Sunday night, about 152,000 customers were without power in Lehigh, Northampton, Warren and Hunterdon counties, according to the FirstEnergy and PPL Electric Utilities websites.

PPL spokesman Kurt W. Blumenau said of 142,000 customers in its 29-county territory, it hoped to bring up some 34,000 back into service Sunday night.

"We continue to urge customers to prepare for an outage lasting into the week, if they have not already done so," Bluemenau said. "We are still repairing significant damage to our transmission and distribution networks."

Roads throughout Northampton County were littered with fallen limbs, and some roads were completely shuttered. Traffic was jammed in the Bethlehem area as traffic lights without power turned into four-way stops.

Bob Mateff, Northampton County emergency management coordinator, said the damage exceeded Hurricane Irene in some respects.

“What I’m seeing with the damage to the trees and wires is historic,” he said.

Still, he said Sunday night that about 90 percent of main and secondary roads were passable.

In Warren County, Public Safety Director Frank Wheatley said numerous roads remained impassable, as crews were waiting for JCP&L workers to clear wires downed by falling tree limbs.

“The whole county is hit very hard,” said Wheatley. “We do feel that it’s worse than Irene. We didn’t have the amount of trees come down on the power lines as we did with this storm.”

Those without power Sunday tried to make the best of their situation.

Toner, who lives on Evergreen Drive in Lower Saucon Township, said his power zapped out about 3 p.m. Saturday. He, his wife and daughter went to a Starbucks on Sunday afternoon on Schoenersville and Stoke Park roads in Bethlehem to recharge their electronics and warm up.

Toner said his family passed the powerless hours by reading on a Kindle, watching DVDs on a portable player and playing games.

The family toughed it out Saturday night without heat and planned to do the same Sunday night.

"We all slept in the same bed, bundled up and lit candles," Toner said.

Ryder, of the 500 block of West Third Street in Bethlehem, said she used the outage hours Sunday to clean up a large tree that was toppled by the storm.

"We've been pretty busy with tree damage," said Ryder, whose power went out about 1 p.m. Saturday. "During the day we haven't noticed (the outage) much."

Dale, of the 400 block of Bridle Path Road in Hanover Township, said she was concerned about getting heat into her home with temperatures dipping low during the nighttime hours. However, with a gas range, she could still cook.

Ryder and Toner, who have PPL for electricity, both said they think the company is doing what they can to restore service.

Surgeoner said utility officials tried their best to communicate with municipal and county officials to help keep residents informed of the situation. Toner said he followed PPL's Twitter feed for updates and isn't angry about the outage.

"You got to be realistic about it," Toner said. "Of course I want my power back."

Nazareth Floral Designs closes doors after nine decades in the borough

FROM THE EXPRESS TIMES

A popular South Main Street staple has closed its doors after more than nine decades in business, adding to the number of vacancies Nazareth's downtown is trying to fill.

Nazareth Floral Designs, which opened in 1916 and changed ownership three times, closed Oct. 14. The store’s original owner was the Alpaugh family, which sold the business to Nancy and Les Little, who sold the business in 2007 to Kevin and Nancy Donahoe.

“The business was Chamber Business of the Year in the past and they have been an active, vital part of Main Street,” said Tina Smith, president of the Nazareth Area Chamber of Commerce. “We are obviously very sad to see them move.”

The Donahoes plan to consolidate the South Main Street shop’s merchandise into their store at 589 E. Lawn Road in Upper Nazareth Township. That store, which the couple have owned for 18 years, is about five times the size of the borough location and will better serve customers, Kevin Donahoe said.

Donahoe contends that a tough economic climate in which many mom-and-pop shops are struggling was not a problem for the couple. Instead, they saw more walk-in customers at the Upper Nazareth location, which also includes gift items and furniture.

“About 98 percent of our business in Nazareth was phone and Internet sales,” Donahoe said. “Parking also was an issue. Here, they don’t have to put a nickel in the machine.”

In hopes of gaining more exposure, the Donahoes changed the name of their Upper Nazareth floral shop from Donahoe Farms to Nazareth Floral Designs at Donahoe Farms. Donahoe said he can manage the phone and Internet sales from the Upper Nazareth location, noting the store handled three weddings and four funerals last weekend alone.

“We’ve been very busy,” he said.

Two other vacancies remain just a few doors down from the former Nazareth Floral Designs on either side of the Nazareth Investments building and a few other vacancies exist along Belvidere Street.

Smith reports some vacancies are starting to fill up.

In April, Nazareth Hometown Hardware filled a vacancy left by Nazareth Hardware; NorFay Cafe earlier this month moved into the Bistro on Main storefront and Jelly Bean Town, USA, a children’s scrapbooking and craft shop, is gearing up to move into the spot that housed Kate’s Main St. Garden Cafe.

In January, Donahoe plans to rent out the former floral store to another merchant.

“The people here are very nice. It’s a beautiful town,” said NorFay Cafe owner Sherif Elkhyati, of Allentown, about his reasons for opening in Nazareth.

Despite the competition another floral shop on the same street offers, Lynn Klein, owner of Mycalyn Florals on South Main Street, said she was sad to see Nazareth Floral Designs leave the downtown.

“It saddens any merchant to see a business close, but you do what you have to do when it comes to running your business,” she said. “And you make tough decisions."

Games Six and Seven Give Fox Respectable World Series Ratings

A thrilling sixth game followed by a winner-take-all game seven drove Fox to what ended up being respectable ratings for the World Series.

The thrilling game six 10-9 win by the Cardinals over the Rangers gave Fox a 12.7 rating. The game seven finale earned Fox a 14.5 rating with an audience of 25 million viewers. The game seven rating was the highest for a World Series game since game four of the 2004 World Series.

Over the seven game fall classic Fox had an average rating of 10.0 with an audience of 16.6 million viewers. That number is up 19% over 2010.

Moravian College evacuates dormitories due to power outage in center city Bethlehem

FROM THE EXPRESS TIMES

Moravian College evacuated much of its Priscilla Payne Hurd Campus at 5 this afternoon at Main and Church streets in Bethlehem, according to a posting on its website.

Main, Hill and Clewell residence halls have been emptied and the college will advise students when it is safe to return, according to the website.

College spokesman Michael Wilson said about 300 of the college's 1,600 students live in those residence halls, where power was out for about five hours during Saturday's storm. Electricity was restored but intermittent, he said, but went off again today. PPL Electric Utilities told the college the power will be off at least until Monday and could be out into Tuesday, Wilson said.

Without power, Wilson said, the buildings have no heat.

Evacuees are being given three options, Wilson said:

Go home
Find a friend of the Main Street campus
Be relocated to "overflow housing" on or near campus for the duration.
Classes on Monday have been delayed for two hours, Wilson said.

DeSales University has canceled classes for Monday, according to its website and is encouraging students to go home. Non-essential employees are instructed to stay home on Monday.

Lehigh University evacuated its residence halls, fraternities and sororities this afternoon after a power outage. Classes there were canceled for Monday.

WEEK 6 TV RATINGS

2011-12 Week 6 TV Ratings (first four nights, Mon-Thu):

Households: 1. CBS 7.7 rating/12.0 share; 2. Fox 7.6/11.9; 3. ABC 7.0/10.8; 4. NBC 2.7/4.2; 5. The CW 1.2/1.8
Total Viewers: 1. Fox 12.72 million; 2. CBS 12.53 million; 3. ABC 10.8 million; 4. NBC 4.07 million; 5. The CW 1.78 million.
Adults 18-49: 1. Fox 3.9 rating/10.4 share; 2. CBS 3.3/8.8; 3. ABC 2.8/7.5; 4. NBC 1.4/3.6; 5. The CW 0.7/2.0

Week 6 (Oct. 24-30) Analysis: The World Series has lifted Fox to the lead in viewers and 18-49 through the first four nights. ABC launched Once Upon a Time last Sunday and had the highest rated new drama premiere of the season and episode two is on tonight. But through the first four nights this week, CBS has edged Fox for first in HH, but Fox has the edge in total viewers. In 18-49, Fox has a bigger lead over CBS. ABC is a competitive third across the board, while NBC still way behind in fourth, as some repeats were mixed in (including the terrible move by airing Prime Suspect repeats Mon-Wed at 10). I expect CBS and Fox to battle or HH/viewers but Fox should have enough to take 18-49, even with an NFL overrun tonight on CBS. ABC and NBC will be certain for third and fourth. As for last week, week 5, Fox was first over second place CBS thanks to World Series action and the NFL overrun on Sunday night. CBS was in second place across, the board, with ABC right behind. NBC was fourth across the board even with an NFL Sunday night game, but that game was terrible and a blowout.

Monday had CBS on top again in 18-49, but Fox was right behind them with the World Series. Starting with ABC, Dancing with the Stars won the total viewer race with 17.17 million and a 3.2 18-49 rating, both off some from previous week. A new Castle at 10pm was first place with 10.81 million and a 2.4 18-49 rating, also off some from previous week. Look for the hostage episode tomorrow night that should do well. For CBS, How I Met Your Mother started it off with 9.79 million and a 4.3 18-49 rating, up a tenth from previous week. 2 Broke Girls followed with 11.19 million and a 4.5 18-49 rating, also up a tenth from previous week. Very consistent. At 9pm, a new Two and a Half Men, with new star Ashton Kutcher, did 15.29 million and a 5.5 18-49 rating, up some from previous week for the first time this season. A new Mike & Molly followed the huge lead-in and did 12.16 million and a 4.2 18-49 rating, up from the previous week. An all-new Hawaii Five-0 was next doing 10.7 million and a 3.1 18-49 rating, on par with the previous week. Fox preempted Terra Nova and House for Game 5 of the World Series doing 14.32 million and a 4.2 18-49 rating, but in primetime it did 13.54 million and a 3.9 18-49 rating. NBC followed with another two-hour The Sing-Off doing only 4.18 million and a 1.5 18-49 rating, down some from previous week. What a dud. At 10pm, NBC aired a repeat of Prime Suspect again and it did an embarrassing 2.43 million and a 0.7 18-49 rating, down some from previous week. Rock Center with Brian Williams launches tomorrow night, but I don't think it will be big at all. The CW had a new Gossip Girl doing just 1.36 million and a 0.7 18-49 rating, up some from previous week. At 9pm, Hart of Dixie did 2.01 million and a 0.8 18-49 rating, up a good number from previous week.

On Tuesday, Fox was on top in 18-49, with CBS winning total viewers. CBS had the quiet leader NCIS opening the night off with 19.43 million and a 4.1 18-49 rating, up some from previous week. Then spin-off NCIS: Los Angeles was next and did 15.89 million and 3.7 18-49 rating, up from previous week. And a new Unforgettable did 11.25 million and a 2.5 18-49 rating, on par with previous week. Looks 2.5 is its normal showing, not bad for 10pm on Tuesdays. ABC was next with new comedy Last Man Standing with Tim Allen leading the night off doing 9.88 million and a 2.9 18-49 rating, only off some from previous week. Loved the Halloween episode. Week two of Man Up! was next and it went down to 6.78 million and a 2.0 18-49 rating, down a million from previous week. Could have been much worse, but they need to go up this week to have a chance of staying on the schedule. Then Dancing with the Stars: The Results followed at 9pm with 14.1 million and a 2.6 18-49 rating, on par with previous week with X Factor airing on a special night again, as we said goodbye to Chaz Bono. Look for Justin Bieber on this Tuesday's episode and that will spice up the ratings. An all-new Body of Proof followed and did a decent 9.43 million and a 1.8 18-49 rating, on par week-to-week, but wish the 18-49 was a bit higher. Fox preempted Glee and comedies New Girl & Raising Hope for The X Factor on a special night again doing 12.09 million and a 4.4 18-49 rating for a special extended episode from 8-10:30pm. NBC was next with a two-hour The Biggest Loser doing 5.51 million and a 2.0 18-49 rating, up some from the previous week, as it was down each week the past few weeks. At 10pm, Parenthood was preempted for a repeat of Prime Suspect and did just 2.84 million and a 0.9 18-49 rating. The CW preempted 90210 for a repeat of Ringer that did 961,000 viewers and a 0.3 18-49 rating, then another repeat of the Sarah Michelle Gellar drama did 840,000 viewers and a 0.3 18-49 rating. Looks like this new series isn't repeating well.

Wednesday it was ABC with the win and Fox's Game 6 of the World Series was rained out. CBS started the night off on top with Survivor: South Pacific at 11.79 million and a 3.5 18-49 rating, up from previous week. Veteran drama Criminal Minds was a repeat and did 11.26 million and a solid 2.8 18-49 rating, good repeat numbers. At 10pm, CSI was a repeat too and did 9.06 million and a 2.0 18-49 rating. ABC started off with its Laugh On comedy block with The Middle doing 10.16 million and a great 3.2 18-49 rating, for series highs! The new sitcom Suburgatory followed with a great 9.73 million and a series best 3.4 18-49 rating, up from previous week again. This series is red-hot, no pun intended on the red! Let's get Amy Davidson to guest star or recur--help us out with that! At 9pm, the mega hit Modern Family was a REPEAT and it still did 11.31 million and a huge 4.5 18-49 rating. The 4.5 is by far the highest rated repeat in a long time! A new Happy Endings was next with 8.33 million and a 3.5 18-49 rating, up from the previous week and series highs even with the lead-in as a repeat! Great sign for this comedy that keeps getting buzz every week! At 10pm week six (already?!) of my favorite fall series Revenge did a solid 8.72 million and a 2.7 18-49 rating, its best ratings since the premiere, as I predicted last week. We hear episode seven this week will be HUGE, so make sure to tune in for this vital episode. Fox preempted The X Factor for MLB World Series Game #6, BUT it was rained out! So Fox went with repeats of Glee instead, as the first hour did only 2.45 million and a 0.7 18-49 rating, followed by the second hour doing 2.25 million and a 0.7 18-49 rating.I know it was a last minute scheduling and a repeat, but this show has lost buzz and its audience it seems. NBC opened the night with a repeat of Up All Night at 3.48 million and a 1.1 18-49 rating. At 8:30pm, a repeat of Whitney did 3.8 million and a 1.1 18-49 rating, down a tenth from previous week. At 9pm, Harry's Law was a repeat and still did nothing, doing just a 0.8 18-49 rating and 4.47 million viewers. At 10pm, Law & Order: SVU was preempted for the Prime Suspect repeat stunt at 10pm doing 3.51 million and a 0.8 18-49 rating for last place. The CW had a repeat of Ringer leading the night off with 1.23 million and a 0.4 18-49 rating, on par with previous week. The declining fast America's Next Top Model was next at 9pm with 2.27 million and a 1.0 18-49 rating, but up some from previous week.

Thursday it was Fox with the win again with the World Series. But first, ABC opened the night with Charlie's Angels preempted for the classic special It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown doing 7.44 million and a 2.3 18-49 rating, for the best 18-49 showing all season in this time period for ABC! At 9pm, Grey's Anatomy followed with 9.93 million and a 3.7 A18-49 rating, up some from previous week. Great episode! Still near the top among scripted dramas. At 10pm, Private Practice, with Benjamin Bratt, did 6.4 million and a 2.4 18-49 rating, up some from previous week. CBS opened with The Big Bang Theory at 14.54 million and a 4.6 18-49 rating, down from previous week's season high for 8pm. Then, week two of Rules of Engagement was next doing 10.62 million and a 3.3 18-49 rating, down from previous week. Still solid. A new Person of Interest followed with 11.62 million and a 2.7 18-49 rating, on par with the previous week in 18-49. A new episode of The Mentalist followed and did 12.42 million and a 2.5 18-49 rating, on par with the previous week. A 2.5 is now the leader on Thursdays at 10pm? Fox preempted The X Factor for MLB World Series Game #6 doing 21.06 million and a 6.5 18-49 rating overall through 12:43am ET. But in Primetime it did 19.32 million and a 5.6 18-49 rating. NBC was in the familiar fourth place with the should-be-not leading-off Community getting slaughtered with 3.42 million and a 1.4 18-49 rating only, followed by Parks and Recreation at only 3.87 million and a 1.8 18-49 rating. Not good. At 9pm The Office jumped to 5.53 million and a 2.9 18-49 rating, but this was an all-time low for it on Thursdays. A new episode of Whitney closed the comedy block with only 4.19 million and a 2.0 18-49 rating, but it wasn't down as much as the other sitcoms. NBC has another drama bust with a new Prime Suspect closed the night with only 4.03 million and a 1.1 18-49 rating. The three-episode repeat stunt this week did not help. The CW's big gun Vampire Diaries did 3.28 million, and a 1.5 18-49 rating, up from previous week and is heating up! The new The Secret Circle was next at 2.31 million and a 0.9 18-49 rating, on par with the previous week, could be better.

Now, final numbers for Friday and Saturday are not available, but Fox easily won with Game 7 of the World Series. Extreme Makeover: Home Edition for ABC was down, CBS aired repeats and NBC had the season premiere of Chuck with terrible ratings and OK numbers for the premiere of Grimm. The latter will be hurt next week when similar skewed series Fringe airs opposite it.
Saturday numbers it was all ABC with the triple overtime game between Stanford and USC in Saturday Night Football, with Fox's two-hour America's Most Wanted special doing OK.

Tonight ABC Sunday is all-new (but AFV is preempted for series premiere encore of Once Upon a Time, Desperate Housewives, and Pan Am). Once opened big for ABC and episode two after an encore of the premiere tonight will help it even more. Look for good numbers again. NBC will win the night with the NFL as Cowboys and Eagles will draw. CBS has its normal line-up of 60 Minutes, Amazing Race, The Good Wife and CSI: Miami, with delays expected as they have the national NFL game from 4:15pm-7:15pm or so. Fox has the animated comedies finally, as they launch a new one in Allen Gregory starring the voice of Jonah Hill.

As for the week (week 6), Fox should win in HH/viewers and for sure in 18-49. A strong game 6 and 7 of the World Series is the reason why. CBS will be second, with ABC in third in all categories, leaving NBC back in fourth even with a big NFL game tonight. Allen Gregory on Fox should premiere decently, but nothing major. Maybe Bob's Burgers style. As for the coming week (week 7), we have the first full week of November sweeps. ABC has its premiere of Scared Shrekless tomorrow night (Halloween night) at 7:58pm, leading into Dancing Halloween episode at a special time. It's a good move, as most trick-or-treaters or partiers should be home by 8 or 8:30 on a school/work night.

Week 6 How the Sitcoms Did

Last Sunday Sitcoms (counts for Week 5 -- Oct. 17-23)

•The Simpsons (Fox) - preempted.

•The Cleveland Show (Fox) - preempted.

•Family Guy (Fox) - preempted.
•American Dad! (Fox) - preempted.

Monday Sitcoms
•How I Met Your Mother (CBS) - An all-new episode did 9.79 million and a 4.3 18-49 rating, up some from previous week in 18-49. Not sure what made this season re-surge, it'll be interesting to see if it lasts all season.

•2 Broke Girls (CBS) - A new airing did 11.19 million a 4.5 18-49 rating, also up some from the previous week in 18-49. It's doing as well as CBS could have thought, I think.

•Two and a Half Men (CBS) - 15.29 million and a 5.5 18-49 rating is excellent and for the first time this season it didn't drop from previous week. Has it stabilized?

•Mike & Molly (CBS) - With the strong lead-in, a new episode did 12.16 million and a 4.2 18-49 rating, up from previous week.

Tuesday Sitcoms

•Last Man Standing (ABC) - An all-new episode in the 8pm half-hour did 9.88 million and a 2.9 18-49 rating, off some from previous week but still very solid. Look for a back nine pick-up this week maybe?

•Man Up! (ABC) - Week two of this comedy did 6.78 million and a 2.0 18-49 rating, down a million from the premiere. Could have been worse, but needs to do better. No more drops.

•New Girl (Fox) - preempted, will air next this Tuesday.

•Raising Hope (Fox) - preempted, will air next this Tuesday.

Wednesday Sitcoms

•The Middle (ABC) - A new episode did 10.16 million and a 3.2 18-49 rating for series highs. Great showing as the Halloween episode delivered! This is a classic family comedy.

•Suburgatory (ABC) - A new episode did a very good 9.73 million and a series high 3.4 18-49 rating, building from its lead-in again and up from the previous week! Jane Levy is such a star!

•Up All Night (NBC) - A repeat did 3.48 million and a 1.1 18-49 rating, as it doesn't seem to repeat all that well.

•Whitney (NBC) - A repeat did 3.8 million and a 1.1 18-49 rating, down some from the previous week. This is its last Wednesday repeat airing, thank god.

•Modern Family (ABC) - A repeat did 11.31 million and a 4.5 18-49 rating, yes a REPEAT did that high! Wow. Best 18-49 rating for a repeat, scripted or unscripted, in years.

•Happy Endings (ABC) - A new episode did 8.33 million and a 3.5 18-49 rating, for series highs again. This is by far its best showing ever as it did this with a repeat lead-in. Wow and what a funny Halloween episode!

Thursday Sitcoms

•The Big Bang Theory (CBS) - A new episode did 14.54 million and a 4.6 18-49 rating, down a half a point from previous week. World Series probably affected it a bit.

•Rules of Engagement (CBS) - The second episode this season did 10.62 million and a 3.3 18-49 rating. Solid numbers, but down some week-to-week.

•Community (NBC) - A new episode did just 3.42 million and a 1.4 18-49 rating. When is this not going to lead-off anymore?

•Parks and Recreation (NBC) - A new showing of this show did 3.87 million and a 1.8 18-49 rating, likewise for this series, as it should never be in the 8pm hour. It doesn't fit the hour.
•The Office (NBC) - A new episode did 5.53 million and a 2.9 18-49 rating, for the best of the block like usual, but this is way lower than usual and its lowest ratings ever on a Thursday.

•Whitney (NBC) - A new episode did 4.19 million and a 2.0 18-49 rating. Why this show was picked-up for a full season is beyond me, but it was down the least this week among the four NBC comedies. That's the only positive.

Friday Sitcoms

•None.

Saturday Sitcoms

•How I Met Your Mother (CBS) 2 airings - A repeat on Saturday did a prelim 2.24 million and a prelim 0. 718-49 rating, lower than previous week's Men repeat. A second airing did no better at 8:30pm with a prelim 1.87 million and a prelim 0.6 18-49 rating. They should stick with better repeating comedies like Bang or Men.

Airing tonight (Sunday) are Fox's animated comedies from 8-10pm, with repeats 7-8pm. Look for the series debut of Allen Gregory at 8:30pm.

Summing it up. Modern Family, Two and a Half Men, The Big Bang Theory, 2 Broke Girls, How I Met Your Mother, Mike & Molly, Last Man Standing, Suburgatory, The Middle, Happy Endings, Rules of Engagement were impressive for the week. Everything else was OK (such as The Office, Whitney ) or just plain old terrible (such as Community, Parks & Recreation).

Cup of Joe on Limiting Discussion

FROM ROSS NUNAMAKER

The Express-Times' Cup of Joe column this week speaks to Nazareth's decision to limit public input in the name of making meetings more efficient.

I wrote previously, but had one additional thought, apply the same limit to board members and administrators that you do the public.

Phillipsburg-Easton Hallowfest Parade postponed

FROM THE EXPRESS TIMES

The Phillipsburg-Easton Hallowfest Parade has been postponed due to the weather, Easton Mayor Sal Panto Jr. and Phillipsburg Mayor Harry Wyant said this morning.

Panto said the Warren County Convention & Visitors Bureau, the parade sponsor, will hold a meeting tomorrow to determine another date.

An e-mail sent to local officials by the visitors bureau said the decision was made after speaking with several police departments and emergency officials.

NFL Picks Week 8: There's at least one parade still going on today

FROM KEITH GROLLER

No Allentown Halloween parade today.

No Bethlehem Halloween parade today.

But there is one parade going on today; there's one in St. Louis.

I will be there in spirit, even if I spend this Sunday going from Norwich, NY where I spent the night after the Lehigh-Colgate game to Philadelphia where I will be part of our coverage team for the Cowboys-Eagles game.

If you asked me about it in late August, or late September or even when they trailed the Phillies 2-1 in the NLDS, I would have said there was more of a chance of a major snowstorm in the Lehigh Valley in late October than there was the chance the Cardinals would have a championship parade at the end of October and unbelievably, both things happened this weekend.

Even more of a miracle to me is that I am doing fairly well with my NFL picks -- going 8-5 outright, 8-4-1 vs. the spread and 7-6 on the over/under totals last week.

For the season, I am 60-28 outright, 52-47-2 against the spread and 51-48-2 on the over/under totals.

Because it's such a busy day, we'll plunge ahead with the picks here in Norwich -- the home of a pretty entertaining Pumpkin Festival and Fireworks Show that I attended last night -- even though it's 8:10 a.m. as I start typing away.

HOME TEAMS IN CAPS

TENNESSEE (-9) 28, Indianapolis 17 -- Over the 43.5 -- I agree with Phil Simms. "The Suck for Luck" campaign will never gain momentum in Indy as long as Peyton Manning can walk and talk.

HOUSTON (-9.5) 27, Jacksonville 14 -- Over the 40.5 -- Houston is the reverse of St. Louis. It's always football season in Houston, thank you Ed Wade, while it's always baseball season under the Arch.

Minnesota (+4.5) 23, CAROLINA 20 -- Under the 47 -- Donovan McNabb interview on The NFL Network will be interesting and he will deny, deny, deny. But at some point, doesn't he have to look in the mirror and stare at the truth?

New Orleans (-13.5) 30, ST. LOUIS 14 -- Under the 48 -- Don't worry my St. Louis brothers and sisters. Once the parade cleanup is over, spring training will only be about three months away. There may be more St. Louis people at the parade today than inside the Dome.

BALTIMORE (-13) 34, Arizona 17 -- Over the 43 -- One thing Andy Reid does know is when to get rid of quarterbacks.

NY GIANTS (-10) 24, Miami 13 -- Under the 41.5 -- At least the Dolphins are still in Luck.

BUFFALO (-5) 27, Washington 13 -- Under the 45 -- Who would have ever thought the Redskins would have to travel to Buffalo to escape the snow?

Detroit (-3) 24, DENVER 17 -- Under the 41.5 -- Why is it that every time I turn on a sports channel -- with the possible exception of The MLB Network -- I seem to see Tim Tebow?

PITTSBURGH (+1.5) 34, New England 31 -- Over the 52.5 -- The one guarantee of the weekend is that this will be the most-watched game on Sunday afternoon with only Cowboys-Eagles later beating it in the ratings.

SAN FRANCISCO (-9) 24, Cleveland 16 -- Over the 38.5 -- 49ers running away with the NFC West by default.

Cincinnati (-1.5) 23, SEATTLE 17 --Over the 37.5 -- Forget Luck. Pete Carroll would probably rather have his former USC quarterback Matt Barkley come to the great Northwest.

PHILADELPHIA (-3) 34, Dallas 24 -- Over the 48.5 -- Weird things happen to Tony Romo when the spotlight is the brightest and it will be pretty bright tonight in Philly. He'll be sure to do something dumb in a key spot.

San Diego (-3) 24, Kansas City Chiefs 17 -- Under the 44.5 -- Chargers will set up their fans and many of the NFL experts for another postseason flop.

That's it. Power to the people! Especially those who lost it yesterday.

UPCOMING EVENT AT THE NAZARETH ARTS CENTER:
Kama Linden | Frank Porter
Friday, November 4, 2011 | 7:30 - 9:30 p.m.
Kama Linden is a fireball of energy, passion, and versatility. This gutsy lyricist catches you with her edgy lyrics and voice, lulls you in with smooth vocals, and has you grooving with sultry sounds that are undeniably her own.

Although her music has a fully orchestrated production on the CD, she usually tours as an acoustic soloist, or plays with a partner or acoustic trio. She has been playing the Eastern Seaboard lately, but has also recently performed in London/Southeast/Devon, Wales, Amsterdam, Australia and Prague.

Frank Porter will open with a 45 minute acoustic set.

The show is a part of the Missing Persons/Squeeky Wheel Tour. www.411gina.org The person we are highlighting is: Jared Lee Burton.http://www.411gina.org/jarrettleeburton.htm
Jarrett was last seen at approximately 8:00 pm at his residence in the vicinity of the 1400 block of Seidersville Road in Bethlehem, PA. Jarrett does have a medical condition and may need medication. He was last seen April 4, 2007. He is 58 years old. Thanks to 411Gina.org, Many families of missing teens have found both help, and answers, when authorities have stopped looking.

Tickets $10.00
