THINGS TO WATCH

Don’t forget about two great New Year’s Day traditions -- the Mummers and Tournament of Roses parades. I always like to check in on both for a bit.

According to the Associated Press, the Mummers have agreed to pay $150,000 to the city of Philadelphia for costs associated with their annual New Year's Day parade. The Mummers said Wednesday that they have already raised nearly two-thirds of the money. It will go toward police, street clean-up and other costs, the AP says. Weather could still threaten the parade; Mummers' leaders say they will meet at 4 a.m. then notify the city if the parade will go on, the AP is reporting.

If you’re planning to head out to see the parade live, here are the route and performance locations. The parade will be broadcast on WPHL TV Channel 17 starting 10:30 a.m. (and a preshow at 9 a.m.).

Right now, as another snowstorm blankets our region, I'm daydreaming about how awesome it would be to see the Rose Parade live in Pasadena, Calif. But, no! ABC, Hallmark Channel, HGTV, NBC, Travel Channel and Univision will all be carrying the parade, which starts 11 a.m. EST.

This year’s Rose Bowl game, at 4:30 p.m., will feature the No. 8 BCS-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes versus the No. 7 BCS-ranked Oregon Ducks. Between Rose Parade time and the game, ABC also will be carrying the Capital One Bowl matchup between LSU and Penn State. Root, root, root for the home team starting at 1 p.m.

NOC REVIEW

From Ross Nunamaker

Thought I’d attempt a look back at 2009 through the eyes of NOC. It’s a long post, so I hope you aren’t reading this on a phone!

Overall, there were 110,932 site visits and 160,454 page views of the 632 items posted. But, this was the year NOC went social. I began using new services to distribute NOC content beyond the site itself. So the actual number of people getting the content was much higher than the site numbers indicate.

Beginning in late spring, every post was distributed to the following:

•Twitter, which has 77 people following
•Posterous, which has 3 followers and 1,641 page views
•Facebook, where each is posted on my wall for my 330+ friends and to the fan page that has 100+ fans

So all in all, it seems that people enjoy getting the information and now they can read it in different places.

Also, Nazareth is fortunate to have a lot of blogs that provide local information. In late May I began to do a weekly round-up that includes: Andy’s Fan Page, Breakfast in the Valley, Center for the Arts, Clonehenge, House to Home, Lehigh Valley Ramblings, Lower Nazareth Citizen Forum, Maker Diaries, Steaming Cup of Joe, Tatamy Happenings, and Weird Nazareth. Best wishes to all my fellow bloggers for continued success in 2010!

So what happened this year through the eyes of NOC?

Four days stood out with the most visits:

•January 26: Three posts were made this day, including the most viewed individual post (see below) and one on crime in Nazareth.
•July 8: This traffic was driven by the Fireworks being cancelled for Nazareth Day (see item #2 below)
•October 20: Parents upset with how the new Intermediate School was operating lodge a series of complaints at the school board meeting
•November 4: Election updates(see item #6 below)!

These were the stories with the most page views on the site (this means someone didn’t read the article on the home page but actually clicked on the link to read the post or had the link emailed to them and clicked on it):

10. Nazareth Day Road Rally > Conducted each year in conjunction with Nazareth day, information on the event and sign up was the tenth most viewed page this year, which could be due in part to the fact that it includes an announcement that the fireworks were cancelled and more details would follow (see item 2 below).

9. Senate Bill to Cut Library Funding > I think everyone knows I’m a big advocate of the library, so seeing this link make the top 10 suggests to me that I’m not alone.

8. Fastnacht Day Coming Soon > Was a little surprised to see this make the list, but I guess NOC readers want to know where to get their genuine Fastnachts!

7. Death Ruled Homicide > Patrick O’Brien’s death was ruled a homicide making it the first murder since 1978 to take place in the borough

6. Local Election Results > Local government is where sites like NOC can serve the people the best because print and tv can’t possibly cover all the municipalities in depth. Will need to boost the meeting coverage, but this result is proof that people do want the information.

5. Teen Dies in Violent Lehigh County Crash > One of several tragedies that occurred this year. Nazareth student, Angelica Fox, died in a car crash in Lehigh County

4. NASBRA – What A Race > This has fast become one of the most fun, unique, local events. This year, the adult soap box racing association, even had Mario Andretti waving the checker flag for each heat. Glad to see it ranked as high as it did and maybe even more will take part next year. Pictures from the event helped it average nearly 4:00 minutes per visitor making it the longest average time at 3:54.

3. Hollywood Video Closing > A little bit of a surprise it made the list, but then again, most people were surprised to find the door locked with no previous notice.

2. Fireworks Canceled for Nazareth Day > I almost don’t even want to bring this issue up. It may not have had the most item page views, but it certainly was a powder keg. On July 8 over 1200 pageviews were recorded with most people reading from the homepage not the stand alone page for the article. There also wound up being several posts on this topic garnering over 70 comments on the site and many more on Facebook.

1. Economic Stimulus Email > I posted an email I received asking me to fill out lots of personal information to be eligible for Federal Stimulus funds. This was the most viewed post of the year, and not one comment. It was so obvious this was a fraud I didn’t look it up at the time, but did now and found FraudWatch International had an article on it the day after I posted (read it here).

Some other interesting items that didn’t make the top ten:

January opened with a boil water advisory mess thanks to Easton Suburban Water Authority’s new call system. Apparently the system wasn’t loaded with customers’ phone numbers, but instead a purchased list of numbers based on geography. As such, customers who were affected weren’t notified and those who weren’t customers and not affected were (read the post here).

On Earth Day, the Borough removed an old Beech Tree in the Circle that had some individuals very upset, first with the removal and second with the timing (read the post here).

In June an abduction in Nazareth led to a police chase and death of State Trooper Joshua Miller in Monroe County making state and national headlines (read the initial post here).

Also in June, an 18 year old went to Wal Mart, got caught stealing, fought store security, was arrested, and while in the Colonial Regional Police Dept. cell he pulled a fire alarm causing $5000 worth of water damage. This was followed by several other nearly unbelievable acts. One teen was charged with destroying his mother’s home by punching holes in the walls and tearing down parts of the ceiling, and another attempted to out run police, nearly hit Pizza Joe’s restaurant with his car, then tore through a corn field (read the post here) before being caught.

In July, it was hot, so John Dilli of Upper Nazareth went to 7-Eleven, stripped naked, yelled “let’s go coppers” and jumped on the hood of his car. He was tasered and arrested (read the post here) amazingly he was not charged with indecent exposure.

July saw Nazareth again in the national media when the Colbert Report on Comedy Central spoofed the Nazareth Library for revoking a Tatamy resident’s library card, because it was provided in error. He should have gone to Easton (read it here).

In August, police pull a car over and as they approach the driver throws marijuana through the window. After his arrest the driver mentions there is a fair amount of money in the car. Police eventually find $125,000 (read it here). In Bushkill, a 19 year old stole a car and led police on a chase that resulted in several charges and numerous traffic violations. Police ultimately tasered the individual after stopping his vehicle.

Twenty homes in Upper Nazareth were evacuated and the Bethlehem Bomb Squad was brought in when a resident found a WWII grenade while going through a deceased relatives possessions (read it here).

And to close the month out, ghostbusters visited the Newburg Inn and determined it was haunted (read it here).

Martin on Main was a huge success as hundreds of enthusiasts were joined by residents to celebrate guitar making and playing (read the post here).

The swine flu, particularly in the NASD, dominated September news.

In early November, a gang style beating took place at Nazareth High School when three girls planned an assault on another girl and carried it out as students stood by watched, photographed, and videotaped the event later posting it online (read it here).

December put Nazareth in the national spotlight again when the Huffington Post reported on the Wal Mart in LNT secretly recording in a unisex bathroom (read it here).

Openings and Closings (from posts I made, definitely not comprehensive):

The Ranchhouse remained vacant while Nazareth Hardware, General Supply, 84 Lumber, Blockbuster, Lilly’s Tacos, JAK-e Potatoe Co., Hollywood Video, and Powerhouse Gym, all closed and the Miss PA pageant decided to leave Nazareth for Western PA.

On the other hand, Chick Fil-A, Hobby Lobby, Harvest Grill, Hana Sushi, Goodfellas, Marissa’s Boutique, Five Guys Burgers and Fries, Target, Toy Stop, Sports Authority (and all the other stores in the complex) opened this year as did the Nazareth Center for the Arts.

Thank You!

Thanks for continuing to read NOC, submitting suggestions, and keeping me informed of what is happening.

BANGOR BAND

The Bangor Area High School marching band is scheduled to perform New Year's Day at halftime in the 2010 Gator Bowl, according to a news release. The Bangor Slater Marching Band is also set to walk in the Gator Bowl parade, the release says.

The Gator Bowl will broadcast at 1 p.m. from Jacksonville Municipal Stadium on CBS. Bobby Bowden's Florida Gators are taking on the West Virginia Mountaineers.

The band is one of several chosen to perform from a group of several dozen. The band was selected based on "outstanding musical performance, visual impact, geography and community support," the release says.

Each band seeking to perform at the Gator Bowl submitted an application detailing past performances and accomplishments, as well as written recommendations and evidence of community service, the release says.

The band left for Florida on Sunday and will return home Saturday. The band is also scheduled to march in Disney's Main Street Magic Kingdom and Field Show competition during its trip.

SNOW

Snow has made major highways and local roads equally treacherous this morning, according to commuters.

Motorists navigating Routes 22 and 512, for example, reported average speeds of 20 to 35 mph and delays of a half-hour or more.

One lehighvalleylive.com visitor reported that a garbage truck is stranded on their street.

"I have a feeling they told him to sit where he was and not move. This weather is bad!"peachi writes.

Once you've made your way to work, tell us how long it took you to get from Point A to Point B. And be sure to include how long the trip usually takes.

If you're lucky enough to have the day off, grab a ruler, measure the snowfall outside your front door and share it with the rest of us by posting a comment. Don't forget to include your location.

There were 1.5 inches outside The Express-Times offices in Downtown Easton shortly after 8 o'clock.

BILL MCCOACH

One of my favorite people in local sports -- longtime Lehigh University sports PA announcer Bill McCoach -- had a streak end on Wednesday night.

Lehigh sports information sent out a release. Here it is:

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Fans attending Wednesday’s Christmas City Classic championship saw a heck of a game. But as the crowd settled in and the game got underway, it’s what they heard that likely garnered their attention: a voice other than that of Bill McCoach greeting them on the sound system. For the first time since 1988, a Lehigh basketball game was played at Stabler Arena without McCoach behind the microphone.

Over the Christmas holiday, McCoach, 78, contracted laryngitis and lost his voice. He worked the first two games of the Classic on Tuesday, but was struggling mightily by game’s end. Despite treatment from Lehigh’s Sports Medicine staff, McCoach lost his voice completely and was unable to announce Wednesday’s doubleheader.

McCoach sat on press row opposite the team benches Wednesday, as Steve Lomangino – the radio voice of Lehigh wrestling – filled in for McCoach, whose streak ended at exactly 560 consecutive Lehigh men’s and women’s basketball home games broadcast.

“Bill is a legend when it comes to Lehigh basketball, and he can’t be replaced,” Lomangino said after the games. “I’m just relieved that he approved of the job I did. Although none of us wanted to see the streak come to an end, I’m glad I was able to step in and help out, but I’m looking forward to seeing him back in his rightful place on Saturday.”

McCoach, who is also the public address announcer for Lehigh football, men’s and women’s soccer, cross country, field hockey, volleyball, wrestling, track & field, baseball, softball, and men’s and women’s lacrosse – plans to return to action Saturday evening for a Lehigh basketball doubleheader. That night, the women host Akron at 5 p.m., and the men will take on NJIT at 7:30 p.m.

If all goes according to plan, McCoach’s new streak will sit at “two” come Sunday morning.

From Groller's Corner, here's hoping that one of the great voices and great people in Lehigh Valley sports regains that voice soon and is back where he belongs behind a microphone.

B-BALL REPORT

The latest report from Greg Garcia:

On Tuesday night, Pocono Mountain East fell short to Harrisburg 68-51 in the Harrisburg Slamfest tournament. The game was the second matchup of the night within the tournament.

The Cardinals got in big trouble early in the game when the Cougars began a full court press, which led to turnovers. 6-foot-6 senior Bryan Taylor was a huge difference maker down low for the Cougars. Many Cardinal players were forced to alter their shot in mid air because of his presence. The Cardinals used all their options to try and stop him, but Taylor still was too much of a force.

In the second quarter, the Cardinals were outscored 15-5 and their top two scorers Kyheim Hall and Lamont Tillery sat out most of the remaining half in foul trouble.

Sophomore David Garcia led all Cardinal scorers with 15 points off the bench. Garcia provided a nice spark for Coach Heaton.

The Cardinals looked extremely vulnerable to full court pressure and stopping a legit foward down low.

Bethlehem Catholic crowns five champions to win Christmas City Holiday Wrestling Classic
By Express-Times staff
December 31, 2009, 12:16AM

A year removed from finishing as runner-up to PIAA Class AA power Schuylkill Haven, Bethlehem Catholic turned the tables by winning the Christmas City Holiday Wrestling Classic over the Panthers 233-223 in the 22 team field.

Darian Cruz (103), Randy Cruz (112), Ryan Todora (130), Elliott Riddick (145) and Kyle Dehaut (152) all won titles as underclassmen for head coach Jeff Karam's squad. Dehaut, who decked Allen's Ahmed Burton in the final, was named as the tournament's outstanding wrestler.

“I feel really good about our team, especially in tournaments,” Karam said. “We have some outstanding individuals. And they’re all young and they’ll all be back. There will be ups and downs but we’re pretty excited."

Wilson's Brandon Hartrum (119), Luke DeLuise (171) of Pius X and the Whitehall duo of Taray Carey (215) and Tony Bourizk (285) rounded out the champions from the region.

NORTHAMPTON TOURNAMENT

Coaches are, by nature, complainers. They bark about this, bark about that. They want perfection from their kids and the officials.

So, it is refreshing to hear so many coaches say good things.

Pocono Mountain West's Brad Pensyl was happy about his team, happy to back in Northampton for the holidays. Pensyl enjoys coming down to the Lehigh Valley as much as possible and has found a home with the Konkrete Kids tournament. He even acknowledged the recent passing of longtime K-Kids fan Harriet Lindenmoyer and said it was a shame that she's no longer with us and will be missed.

The West-Northampton relationship also extends to PM West's assistant AD, Greg Vogel, a Northampton sports legend.

Pocono West is a very young team, a very talented team that will get better if they stay intact.

The Pocono West-Northampton game will be a good championship game tonight, a nice building block for the winner.

The Konkrete Kids, by the way, didn't play exceptionally well against Catasauqua, but coach Ed Ohlson is extremely pleased with the mix and leadership he has on that team. Northampton will be in the hunt in the LVC North and will be a District 11 playoff team.

(Catty's Josh Case, left, scored 21 points on Tuesday night, but Northampton's defense, including Landon Small (30), put the clamps on the Rough Riders).

Ohlson, by the way, agrees with me and others that the league may not have that one super team -- Liberty being the exception. But he agrees that teams 2 through 11 are very evenly matched and this regular season will offer close games and surprises every night. It should be a lot of fun to watch.

I will be surprised if there are not a lot of teams hovering around .500 and looking for district playoff berths in the final week of the regular season. It's conceivable that eight or nine teams from the LVC will make the D11 playoffs, but there's going to be little margin for error.

******************

Elsewhere on Tuesday night, Becahi won a close consolation game at Emmaus, while the host Green Hornets lost a thrrilling final to Upper Dublin.

Liberty lost its first game of the season in the Williamsport tournament against defending state champ Archbishop Carroll.

Whitehall won its tournament, in overtime.

Central Catholic got a much needed win over York Catholic.

Easton bounced back from a disappointing effort against Notre Dame with a low-scoring win over Wilson.

Allen lost to Frankford in its tournament title game.

Parkland continues to struggle and lost by a point in Wildwood, although the Trojans did finally get point guard Nick Miller back.

Notre Dame and Northern Lehigh picked up tourney titles.

Southern Lehigh seems to be playing better basketball after a slow start.

Palisades continues to lose the close ones, although Josh Parris had 30 points against Fleetwood.
