Tyler Vail, a University of Maryland recruit out of Notre Dame-Green Pond High School, was selected today in the fifth round of the Major League Baseball draft by the Oakland A's.
Vail, pick No. 155 overall, was the Colonial League MVP this season after going 6-2 with 2.10 ERA and 93 strikeouts. He also plays second base and hit .492 with five doubles, two home runs and 24 RBIs.
Check out a scouting video of Vail.
Vail gathered with family and friends at Starters Riverport in Bethlehem for lunch and to watch the draft on the MLB website.
He was then called by an A's scout to inform him he'd been drafted.
"I was shocked. I was excited. I don't think I've ever sweated so much in my life," he said. "This is what I've been working for since I started playing baseball ... it's kind of amazing to realize it really happened."
Vail said he is "leaning" toward signing a professional contract with the A's rather than play at Maryland. But the 18-year-old said he plans to discuss the decision with his family either tonight or Wednesday before making a final decision.
