Chartiers Houston won its first ever PIAA softball championship by defeating Montgomery 4-1 in the Class A championship game Friday evening at Shippensburg University's Robb Field.
The Buccaneers (19-2) had been in five previous finals, but this was their first gold medal to go along with the silvers.
After falling behind 1-0 early, Houston tied the score in the top of the fourth with an RBI single by Rachel Tucker.
The game remained tied into the sixth, when Chrissy Scott led off with a double and scored on Colby Miller's single to put the Bucs up 2-1. Miller later scored on an infield grounder for a 3-1 lead.
Alyssa Phillips scored an insurance run in the seventh when Kelli Defrense singled her in.
The Raiders (23-2) took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Kelsey Lynch led off the game with a walk, then scored on a single and outfield fielding error off the bat of Casey Drick.
Montgomery put runners on second and third with no outs in the second but did not score. Houston starter Kiersten Conwell got the next three batters out, two of them on strikeouts.
“We had a couple of turning points against us,” Montgomery head coach Craig Weaver said. “Definitely when we had runners on second and third, nobody out and didn't get the bunt down.
Conwell finished with seven strikeouts and three walks.
“She needed to get herself settled and into the game, to forget about all the cameras and get into it,” Houston head coach Tricia Alderson said of her pitcher.
Drick took the loss with 14 strikeouts and two walks.
