Weekend Storm Coverage Showcases New Technology
Philadelphia, February 8, 2010 – More than 2.8 million viewers tuned into CBS 3 last night to watch the New Orleans Saints defeat the Indianapolis Colts in Super Bowl XLIV.
The program drew a 48.6 household rating/65.7 share, which translates to more than 2.8 million viewers in the Philadelphia market, according to Nielsen. The audience increased 5 percent over last year’s Super Bowl telecast.
CBS 3’s Eyewitness News at 11 p.m. with Susan Barnett, Chris May, Kathy Orr and Beasley Reece also drew numbers to cheer about, a 13.6 rating/25.8 share to dominate among late newscasts. Sports Zone, hosted by Reece and Don Bell, earned one of its highest ratings ever with a 6.4 rating/15.3 share following the newscast.
The Super Bowl capped off an exciting weekend of news coverage in the Philadelphia market, led by CBS 3’s 11 hours of wall-to-wall coverage of the record snowstorm in the region. The station provided the most on-air coverage of the storm. At any one moment during the day, as many as 160,000 homes were tuned into Eyewitness News as the station combined current and emerging technology for the most complete coverage available. In addition to traditional news gathering equipment, reporters used iPhones, laptops and streaming video to further enhance storm coverage. Viewers participated in the event as well by contributing their own video, photos and comments via Facebook and Twitter.
“We were pleased to be able to use every resource available to us to provide this public service during such a critical and potentially dangerous weather event,” says Vice President and News Director Susan Schiller. “The combination of our reporters and photographers in the field, the new technology and contributions from our own viewers gave us a broad perspective on this historic storm.”
CBS 3 (KYW-TV) and The CW Philly (WPSG-TV) are part of CBS Television Stations, a division of CBS Corporation.
