RCN Customers were without Sunday Night

Subscribers to the RCN cable television system were greeted with frustration Sunday night, surely ruining Winter Olympics coverage for many viewers in the Lehigh Valley.

An automated message at RCN offices Sunday night described problems with the system's digital converters. Callers smack dab in the middle of prime time were mostly greeted with a busy signal, which tipped the Steaming Cup that the problems were not restricted to the home kettle. The Cup eventually made a connection and punched through to a recording describing the problem.

Many viewers were on the edge of their seats for Olympic ice hockey and Bode Miller's gold medal slalom run.

Not the Cup. It was worse.

The outage ruined a perfectly good new episode of Desperate Housewives. And, to a lesser extent, Brothers and Sisters.

If you missed the Olympics, pick up a copy of today's Express-Times or click over for more coverage.

If you missed the Wives, well ....

The new girl is a former stripper Susan befriended when Susan learned she owned a piece of a strip club left to her by her former husband Carl, who as you know was run over by an airplane.

Anyway, all of the guys in the neighborhood were drooling over the new woman, much to the dismay of the rest of the ladies.

Other than that, what I mostly saw was " ... initializing, please wait ... " or " ... loading ... "

Being in the business of information delivery, I can sympathize with a technical problem that leaves customers in a lurch. RCN appeared to have the problem fixed this morning, and I'm sure ;) the cable provider is planning to credit customers for their troubles. (Check back here later for official word from RCN).

But I just hope the problems don't extend to the video-on-demand feature, because I need to know if they ran this woman out of town. Gabby looked really ticked.
