The Lehigh Valley will not be without a National Premier Soccer League team this spring and summer.
Last fall, the board of directors of the Pennsylvania Stoners voted to disband. Today, Fred Stellato, one of those directors, announced the formation of F.C. Sonic Lehigh Valley, which will play its home games at Lehigh University's Ulrich Sports Complex.
FC. Sonic will make its home debut May 16 against Central Jersey.
The NPSL is a nationwide league of top-level college players looking to hone their skills and raise the level of competition in the collegiate off-season. Dave "Whitey" Weitzman, that head coach of the Stoners last season, will coach F.C. Sonic along with assistant Fernando Carrizo.
"Thanks to the dedication of many people, and thanks primarily to a new group of enthusiastic sponors, F.C. Sonic will proudly represent the Lehigh Valley in the highly competitive NPSL," said Stellato, who will serve as the team president.
All home games will be broadcast on Service Electric Cable Television and Blue Ridge Cable.
A total of 16 players, including 10 former Stoners, have already committed to F.C. Sonic, which will hold open tryouts from 9-11 a.m. on April 3 and April 10 at Iron Lakes Sports Dome on Shankweiler Road in Allentown.
