FROM THE EXPRESS TIMES
It took a long look in a full-length mirror before Nazareth resident Christine Simpson realized it was time to make a change.
About nine years ago, the mother of two didn’t weigh herself regularly and was rarely photographed, but knew her weight was fluctuating.
Her husband, Commonwealth Court Judge Robert "Robin" Simpson, had been campaigning and it seemed like every day a buffet spread of goodies was before her to munch on.
By the time Simpson took action, her weight was 35 pounds over her recommended weight.
“It crept up on me. It was portion control and I wasn’t exercising the way I needed to be,” said Simpson, who has launched a weight-loss contest in Nazareth. “It was five pounds here, five pounds there and all of a sudden it was 35 pounds I needed to lose.”
After trying every diet available, she came across a program that resulted in her losing the extra weight in 13 weeks.
Now, the former Allen High School psychologist has found a full-time career as owner of Nutrition on Broad, 107 S. Broad St., helping others achieve similar results.
She is challenging Nazareth area folks in a “Biggest Loser" weight loss competition to keep New Year’s resolutions to maintain healthy weights.
To date, 31 people have signed up for the eight-week program, which began Monday and will end Feb. 27.
The diet program, which she found on the Internet, consisted of drinking two shakes as meal replacements and eating one regular meal daily, as well as exercising regularly and taking supplements.
“I liked it because I didn’t have to cut out foods like Atkins (diet) and I didn’t have to count points,” Simpson said. “I did an ultimate program because I wanted it off yesterday.”
Simpson became a distributor for the diet program's company, which she declined to disclose, citing company policy. She now implements that program at Nutrition on Broad, which is equipped with a bar to make the shakes. Participants can choose from six flavors and about 30 syrups they can add to the drinks.
She hosts about six “Biggest Loser” challenges annually, modeled after the weight-loss show on NBC television. Participants can choose her diet program or whatever works for them. On Monday evenings, participants meet at Nutrition on Broad to weigh in, learn about various topics, discuss troubleshooting and encourage each other.
The competition costs $35 per person. Simpson divides the cash into three grand prizes for the folks who lose the most percentage of weight and inches off their bodies. The event so far has totaled about $775, Simpson said.
She said the challenges have proven successful because often family members compete together and those in the group support each other.
Simpson provides one-on-one counseling through weekly phone calls and e-mails. The most successful results have included three women losing 100 pounds each and a Wilson Borough man losing 51 pounds in 12 weeks.
Simpson got her own family on board, and proudly displays a photo of herself, husband, daughter, son-in-law and son at the facility with a message saying they lost a total of 160 pounds within five years.
“I think the program is very homey. People say it’s just a different atmosphere than other programs out there,” Simpson said. “It’s just magic. People respond to it and my job is to help them get results.”
