Fall roundup of Express-Times area athletes playing at local colleges

As we enter 2012, let’s take a look back and recap what Express-Times region high school graduates achieved athletically at Express-Times area colleges this past fall.

Moravian College
Junior Mike Brand of Hackettstown started 17 games in goal for Moravian men’s soccer team (3-15) and posted a 3.28 goals-against average. Freshman midfielder Shane McCaslin (Freedom) played in 15 games with 10 starts and contributed the game-winning goal in a 4-3 victory over Lancaster Bible. Fr. goalie Ethan Arner (Liberty) made three saves in four appearances off the bench.
Senior midfielder Kristin Popovice (Bangor) played in all 19 games with seven starts and scored one goal for the women’s soccer team (6-11-2). Sophomore midfielder Taylor DiSora (Easton) started in 17 of her 18 appearances and had one goal and one assist. Fr. defender Alyssa Notte (Easton) played in 15 games with 10 starts. Fr. forward Quanie Lightner (Saucon Valley) started 14 games and had two goals and one assist. Jr. goalie Tori Korona (Easton) played 10 games overall and eight in goal, posting a 2.01 goals-against average with one shutout.

Jr. forward Tori Poliskiewicz (Bangor) led the field hockey team (9-8) with seven assists to go with four goals for a third-best 15 points. Fr. Valerie Male (Northampton) started in 13 of 17 appearances and fr. forward Erin Murray (Phillipsburg) played in four games.
Sr. Megan Hallowell (Liberty) was a member of the Landmark Conference champion women’s cross country team. Hallowell ran 25:18.9 for 6,000 meters at the Lafayette Invitational.
Jr. Aaron Thieme (Liberty) had a 83.7-stroke average in six matches for the men’s golf team and fr. Eric Schultz (Easton) appeared in one match this fall.
So. setter Kelly Brown (Bethlehem Catholic) led the women’s volleyball team (23-13) with 1,109 assists and was second on the squad with 413 digs to go with 39 aces. Sr. defensive specialist Ashley Schmidt (Liberty) played in all 36 matches and was third on the team with 365 digs, 41 assists and 42 aces. So. outside hitter Katelyn Strohl (Liberty) played in 18 matches and contributed 34 kills, 12 digs and 7 blocks.
Jr. Alyssa Flowers (Delaware Valley) was 0-1 in singles and 1-4 in doubles for the women’s tennis team.

Lehigh University

Sr. midfielder Dan Odenwelder (Moravian Academy) started 35 of 36 matches the last two seasons for the Lehigh men’s soccer team (8-4-6) and contributed two goals (both game-winners) and two assists this fall.
Sr. forward Caitlin Donnelly (Liberty) started every game this fall for the field hockey team (6-13) and 34 of 35 over the last two seasons. This fall, the All-Academic Patriot League selection (3.80 GPA in Global Studies) was second on the team with five goals and third in points with 13.
Jr. Sam Andersen (North Hunterdon) placed fifth in a dual meet win over Lafayette for the women’s cross country team and was 42nd at the Patriot League championships. So. Jon Merwine (Bethlehem Catholic) was a member of the men’s cross country team.
Sr. Doug Marcincin (Liberty) was the top finisher (13th) for the men’s golf team at the Lehigh Invitational with a pair of 76s.
So. Jill Sloand (Saucon Valley) played at No. 3 doubles and No. 4 singles for the women’s tennis team and contributed a pair of wins in a match against Lafayette.
Fr. defender Jordan Goodwin (Hunterdon Central) played in 14 matches with six starts and had one assist for the women’s soccer team (6-9-2).

Muhlenberg College
The women’s cross country included freshmen Dayna Kline (Northampton) and Cassandra Kozakis (North Hunterdon) and the men’s cross country team rostered freshmen Luke Munyan (Nazareth) and Craig Welker (Nazareth) and sr. Andrew Henry (Northampton). Munyan was 59th at the Lafayette Invitational and 39th at the Lehigh Invitational.
So. midfielder Brendan McIntyre (Freedom) played in 16 games with three starts for the men’s soccer team (10-5-1) and was credited with nine shots.

Fr. midfielder Colleen Touhey (Wilson) started every game for the women’s soccer team (6-10-2) and scored three goals, including a game-winner.
Sr. defender Shelby Smith (Northampton) started 16 of 17 games and recorded two defensive saves for the field hockey team (5-12).

DeSales University
Sr. midfielder Sky Rimmele (Moravian Academy) and senior defenders Nick Alderiso (Bethlehem Catholic) and Jon Mill (Liberty) started all 22 games for the men’s soccer team (15-5-2), which reached the second round of the NCAA Division III tournament. Rimmele had two goals and six assists and Mill had three goals and three assists.
Freshman defenders Collin Roszyk (Bethlehem Catholic) and Phil Bortz (Liberty) appeared in five and four matches, respectively.
Sr. midfielder Amanda Fink (Nazareth) and so. defender Melissa Pugliese (Easton) started every game for the women’s soccer team (3-14-1). Fink had one goal and three assists and Pugliese had one goal. Fr. forward Megan Strausser (Nazareth) played in 18 games with 15 starts and had one assist.
Also for the women’s soccer team, jr. defender/midfielder Alyssa deQuintal (Nazareth) started in 17 of 18 appearances and contributed one assist. So. midfielder Ariel Merkt (Wilson) started in seven of 17 appearances and chipped in with one goal and one assist. Jr. goalie Alex Bastinelli (Liberty) played in 10 matches with five starts and had a 1.87 goals-against average. Sr. forward Rasheida Collins (Liberty) saw action in nine matches and had one assist.
Jr. goalie Victoria DelToro (Liberty) started all 18 games for the field hockey team (4-14) had had a 2.11 goals-against average with two shutouts. So. defender Jen Burley (Easton) started every game and so. forward Sam Lavin (Phillipsburg) started in six of her 17 appearances and scored one goal.
So. Bryan Megee (Notre Dame) was 12th at the Middle Atlantic Conference championships and 39th at the NCAA Division III Mid-East Regional for the men’s cross country team. Jr. Nick Piazza (Notre Dame) was 83rd at the CTC Championships and Sr. Ryne Tierno (Northampton) was 117th at the CTCs.

So. Sarah Braun (Bethlehem Catholic) was the women’s cross country team’s top finisher at the MAC Championships (13th, for All-MAC second-team honors) and was 66th at the NCAA Mid-East Regional. Fr. Kim Garcia (Bethlehem Catholic) was 41st at the MACs as the team’s No. 5 runner and 103rd at the Mid-East Regional. So. Kate Little (Bethlehem Catholic) was 81st at the Lehigh Invitational and fr. Taylor Valentin (Liberty) was 45th at the MACs.

Lafayette College
So. Aimee Smith (Warren Hills) played in every game with four starts for the Lafayette field hockey team (11-9) and tied for second on the team with eight goals and was fourth with 16 points.
Fr. forward Alyssa Finelli (Easton) started in three of her 17 appearances and was second on the women’s soccer team (9-6-2) with two goals and five points.

Centenary College
Sr. setter and co-captain Kelsey Walter (Hackettstown) finished her volleyball career as the Cyclones’ all-time leader in digs (2,076) and sets played. She set a school record this fall with 570 digs and has the program’s top four single-season digs totals. Fr. outside hitter Myriah Jade (North Hunterdon) played in every match for the Cyclones (15-20) and was third on the team with 60 aces and 201 digs to go with 77 kills.

Sr. goalie Jason Rogers (Warren Hills) started every game for the men’s soccer team (9-7-2) and had a 1.64 goals-against average with four shutouts and 97 saves. He finished his career as the program’s leader in saves (294), shutouts (16) and goals- against average (1.64). Jr. midfielder Pat Bourland (Hackettstown) was an All-Colonial States second-team selection after leading the team with eight assists.
Also for the men’s soccer team, so. defender Reid Meeker (Notre Dame) started every game, had one goal and an assist and was named the program’s Colonial States Sportsmanship team representative. Sr. midfielder Matt Winkler (Hackettstown) started in 14 of his 18 appearances and contributed four goals and one assist to earn All-CSAC honorable mention.
Jr. forward Lindsay Baker (Hackettstown) played in seven matches and sr. midfielder Cara Holmes (North Hunterdon) appeared in three matches.
So. Shawnee Smith (Belvidere) posted a best-time of 24:47 for 5,000 meters at the Mules/Falcon Invitational for the women’s cross country team. Sr. Erik Hoagland (Hackettstown) was a member of the men’s cross country team.
Sr. Chris Wilcox (Belvidere) fashioned a 92.3- average for the men’s golf team with a low of 82 at the Immaculata Invitational.

East Stroudsburg University
Sr. midfielder Josh Arcona (Hackettstown) started every game and had one assist for the men’s soccer team (5-8-4). So. midfielder Joan Sebastian Parra (Easton) appeared in 10 matches off the bench.
Sr. midfielder Amanda McGuire (Warren Hills) started all 18 games and led the field hockey team (8-10) with six assists to go with four goals for a second-best 14 points. Fr. forward Tori Popinko (Warren Hills) played in two games.
Fr. outside hitter Alexandra Williams (Notre Dame) played in 69 games and had 88 kills, 11 acces and 18 blocks for the women’s volleyball team (4-23). Fr. defensive specialist Erin Rothrock (Northampton) played in 24 games and had 40 digs.
