Pius X High School advances to PIAA Class A baseball quarterfinals

Anthony Martino pitched a three-hitter and Justin Mazza went 2-for-2 as District 11 champion Pius X High School defeated District 4 champ Sayre 6-1 today in a PIAA Class A first-round baseball game at Williamsport's Bowman Field.

Pius X (16-5) advances to play the winner of today's Northern Bedford-Camp Hill matchup in Thursday's quarterfinal round. (Click here for PIAA baseball scores in all classifications.)

Coach Anthony Casciano's Royals dented the scoreboard in the top of the first inning when George Dalessandro led off with an infield single, Mazza walked and, after a wild pitch by Sayre starter Joey Antonetti, Scott Douglas lofted a sacrifice fly. Pius X opened a 3-0 lead in the fourth as No. 9 batter Josh Labar lined a full-count two-run single into center field.

Sayre (19-4) closed within 3-1 before a walk, two bunts and a single produced three fifth-inning runs for the Royals. Mazza contributed a bunt single and Anthony Casciano produced an RBI single for Pius X's two hits in the inning.

Dalessandro had two hits and two runs scored for the Royals. Labar collected a pair of hits and RBIs. Martino, a sophomore, allowed a walk and an unearned run in his complete-game effort. The right-hander struck out eight.

Pius X, which defeated Notre Dame-East Stroudsburg 3-1 in the District 11 final, is competing in the state playoffs for the third time in school history.
