Centenary College graduate celebrates degree with soldier-husband and infant-daughter in tow

Her husband, U.S. Army Sgt. Chad Lobb, came back from South Korea to watch his wife graduate in person. An online video chat, which is how the young couple typically communicates, just wouldn't have meant the same. Katelyn earned a bachelor's degree in six years. She survived two deployments and five college transfers while raising the couple's 14-month-old daughter and running a small business. Chad Lobb said he simply had to see his wife walk in cap and gown. "With me not being (home)," he said, "it's amazing. "I'm so proud of her." Katelyn Lobb, 24, of Mansfield Township, sat today among her classmates at Centenary's 137th spring commencement ceremony. The college conferred degrees on 508 students during a ceremony held outside the Edward W. Seay Administration Building on Jefferson Street in Hackettstown. For Lobb, who met her husband and daughter, Kyleah, after the ceremony, studying and maintaining a life without her husband wasn't easy. "I think it's harder because we have a little baby," she said. "And I know it's hard for him but we Skype (video chat) everyday, every chance we get." Every morning, before Kyleah rises, Katelyn takes the computer into the crib and Chad wakes her through video chat. "If you're on the computer doing homework or anything else Kyleah will actually scream at you," Katelyn said, "Because she thinks daddy's on the computer." The couple married two years ago. Chad Lobb has served in the military for the past five years. He's going to school online while in South Korea for an associate degree in criminal justice. He wants to become a police officer when he returns for good, he hopes within the next six months. In the meantime, Katelyn Lobb will continue to make skirts, dresses, headbands, bows, blankets and search for a new job as she plans to achieve a master's degree in school counseling in the next three years. Chad Lobb is home for two weeks and then he goes back. But he's enjoying the moment. "I'm so proud of her," he said. "I can't believe the day has finally come, she worked so hard on it." While seeing his family in person is irreplaceable, the video chat offers comfort abroad. "It's nice to be able to see them everyday," he said.
