Allentown resident Varvara Lepchenko upset No. 19 seed Jelena Jankovic of Serbia today at the French Open tennis tournament. The scores were 7-6, 4-6, 6-4 and Lepchenko is on her way to the third round at Roland Garros.
This is the first time the left-handed Lepchenko, playing in her 15th major tournament, has reached the third round of a Grand Slam event. Lepchenko
Jankovic is currently ranked No. 21 in the world. Lepchenko is currently ranked No. 61.
Varvara is currently ranked No. 6 in U.S. women’s tennis, while Vania King is ranked fourth. However, King lost earlier in the French Open.
So, today's win may move Varvara ahead of King in the U.S. rankings, which would mean Varvara has a chance to play in the 2012 Olympic Games in London as a member of Team USA.
Lepchenko, 26, was born in Uzbekistan, formerly part of the Soviet Union. She became a U.S. citizen in 2007.
