Nazareth council passes resolution banning parking at two downtown intersections

Motorists no longer will be able to park at two popular intersections following a resolution passed by the Nazareth Borough Council tonight.

Council members unanimously approved placing "no parking" signs at the southeast corner of South and Broad streets and at the southwest corner of Mauch Chunk and Church Streets. The new no-parking area would run 20 feet east on South Street by St. John’s Cemetery and would run 20 feet west on Mauch Chunk, Council Vice President Larry Stoudt told the public.

Borough Council also approved removing nine parking meters on S. Broad Street in the area of Walnut Street. Council President Daniel Chiavaroli said the reason for removing the meters is because of a traffic light being installed on Broad Street at the recommendation of the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation. The light will create a "straight through" lane near a housing development, he said.

"In order to have a straight through lane, we had to remove the parking meters so cars could go straight through on that lane," Chiavaroli said.

At least one resident questioned raising the meter fine for those parked over two hours from $5 to $10. Stoudt said the borough will look into raising the fine.

In other action, the Borough Council is weighing bids for the borough's trash and recycling collector for the next three years.

Waste Management had previously been the borough's trash collector and came in with the lowest bid at $1,599,783, said Councilman Charles Donello, who is chairman of the ecology committee. The other three bidders included J.P. Mascaro & Sons, Interstate Waste Services of the Lehigh Valley and Raritan Valley Disposal, all for three-year contracts.

Donello told the public he plans to bring the bids to the ecology committee for review. The council is expected to award the bid in October, he said.
