Lehigh Valley posts impressive 11-4 win in Carpenter Cup opener

Lehigh Valley used a five-run third inning to grab an early lead it never lost in an 11-4 win over three-time champion Chester County today in the final game of the first round of the 25th anniversary Carpenter Cup all-star baseball tournament played at Richie Ashburn Field in Philadelphia.

Bethlehem Catholic senior Pat Walshe went 2-for-3 with a triple, a run scored and two RBI for Lehigh Valley, which is seeking its third Cup title since it joined the competition in 1993.

Stroudsburg junior Robert Bennie added a three-run seventh-inning triple to assure the win for Lehigh Valley.

"We're planning to go all the way to Citizens Bank Park (site of the semifinals and finals)," said Easton junior catcher Justin Pacchioli, who had a key two-out RBI single and picked a runner off second base.

Chester County entered the game with the best all-time record in Cup history (35-21).

Lehigh Valley advances to face another rugged foe -- the Suburban One League National Conference/Bicentennial Athletic League; the National has won three Cups on its own and one with the BAL -- Monday at 12:30 p.m. at Ashburn Field.
