Big night for Mountain Valley Conference

The Mountain Valley Conference has to feel pretty good about itself on this Friday.

Pleasant Valley and Lehigton win baseball district titles and Stroudsburg wins gold in 4A softball. No wonder Stroudsburg's long-time AD Beth Ross was beaming when she came into the press box.

She had gone through 13 coaches in 18 years in charge at Stroudsburg. She now has a great guy in Maynard Frantz, a guy who knows softball and how to relate to girls. He should as the father of five daughters who played softball at Pleasant Valley.

We've said for a long time that you earn respect by winning championships. Well, this spring, the MVC has certainly done that in at least two sports.

I like the spunk of the Stroudsburg softball team -- the way they battled back from a 5-0 deficit to beat Easton the other night and the way they fought through 11 errors to win in 10 innings against Emmaus.

(Marley Loftus and the Mounties got knocked down, but kept getting back up in winning district gold).

Sometimes, teams win so much that they begin to take things for granted.

But the sheer joy that the Stroudsburg girls had on Thursday night was refreshing and showed how much this championship meant to them.

Stroudsburg will face a tough Gov. Mifflin team, District 3's No. 2 entry, on Monday. We haven't received official word, but we believe the game will be played at 4 p.m. at Pates Park.

Also, Palisades will return to Pates Park to play District 12 champ Lansdale Catholic in a 3A state opener. We anticipate that game being scheduled for 6 at Pates Park. I know lots of folks were hoping for CAPA and another first-round cakewalk over a District 12 team, but the Philly Catholic League has strengthened District 12 and this will be a good, legitimate first-round matchup.
