FROM THE EXPRESS TIMES
Lehigh Valley school districts are taking steps to make sure coaches and parents of student athletes can recognize the precursors of sudden cardiac arrest.
The Sudden Cardiac Arrest Prevention Act became law earlier this year. Under the law, districts are required to provide information or training on sudden cardiac arrest to coaches and parents, who must then submit written acknowledgement of its receipt.
Pennsylvania is the first state in the nation to adopt legislation that seeks to protect student athletes from sudden cardiac arrest, or SCA. About 2,000 U.S. patients under 25 die from the condition each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
