Dieruff Alumni Association helps send Huskies into football season feelin' good

http://blogs.mcall.com/groller/ FROM KEITH GROLLER Last Sunday I was in attendance when the Dieruff Alumni Association held a picnic for the Husky football team just to let the kids know that the alumni is completely behind them as they embark on a new season in a new league. It was a very nice affair hosted by John Hughes, who was the Kiska Award winner in 1961. John is a first-class guy who has a beautiful home with an in-ground pool that was open to the kids and they took full advantage with a day full of splashes and dives. The food was excellent as well.August 28 download 085 You get the sense that many of these kids have never been treated this well and many of them were very appreciative and made sure to say "Thank You" which was very nice to see. I left after about two hours, but I bet those kids never wanted to leave. The alumni association is in its first full year under the direction of Fred Schuler and he has done a wonderful job building some enthusiasm and energy for Dieruff. And that support is not just directed toward athletes. Fred and Co. were so proud of the theater group that performed "Hairspray" last spring and won several Freddy Awards. The alumni group, and kudos to all who are involved, is directed to all areas of Dieruff High School. August 28 download 083"Unleash Husky Pride" is the motto. Tonight, they are hosting a picnic for the hard-working marching band, which we hear is sounding real good. The band will present its halftime show for the alumni. Here are some photos from the picnic, including the first one above featuring Hughes on the far left, Schuler on the far right and head coach Kyle Beller in the middle along with tri-captains Quinton Williams, Eddie Rodriguez and Damian Diaz. You can see below that the minute the kids got off the bus at John's house, they were greeted warmly.
