Allen softball coach Kelly (Gaydos) Gower confirmed on Monday night that she has resigned.
Gower, who has a daughter (Madison) who will turn one in October, is expecting a second child (this time a boy) at the end of November.
"It's something that my husband Matt (an assistant coach) and I talked about," Gower, a 2000 Allen graduate, said. "It was difficult with one small one, but we made it work last season because our family and friends were extremely supportive. They allowed us to do something we really loved.
"But as we progressed through this pregnancy and thought about it, we decided that at this point in our lives we really needed to focus on our family. This is a decision we made together, and it was 100 percent our decision. It's a tough decision. I love coaching and it's something that's part of my life and it will always be part of my life. It's just that right now, we need to step back and raise our family."
Gower, who is also a business planning manager at PPL, said she hoped to get back into coaching at some point "when the time is right."
Gower was 29-70 in five years, including 4-16 overall and 3-11 in the Lehigh Valley Conference this past spring. Despite those numbers, she said there is hope for the program's future.
"There are a lot of really good kids in the program and some good talent there," she said. "The student-athletes are a lot of fun to work with because they work hard. There's a lot of potential there. We believe in them 100 percent. I know that whoever takes over the program will have a good, strong core to work with. I see bright things for that group."
Allen athletic director Scott Cooperman certainly understood Gower's situation and thanked her for her efforts and wished her well with her family.
