Polony's second straight 3-TD day led Villanova to win over UMass

FROM KEITH GROLLER

On Saturday morning, I wrote about Whitehall grad Matt Hamscher having a banner senior season at the University of Pennsylvania and I did a little followup on him for the Monday paper after Hamscher ran an interception back for a touchdown in the Quakers win over Princeton and Chuck Dibilio on Saturday.

Well, it turns out that Hamscher isn't the only former Zephyr playing for a Philadelphia school who had a big Saturday.

Villanova freshman quarterback Chris Polony threw three touchdown passes in the Wildcats' 35-17 win over UMass in Amherst on Saturday.

Polony was 20-for-31 with no interceptions. His TD passes covered 3, 13 and 30 yards. He also ran for a net-26 yards on 10 carries.

Lehigh Valley natives Mike Sechrist and Frank D'Angelo had pretty good views of Polony's performance since they worked the game as officials. Sechrist was the referee, D'Angelo the side judge.

The win snapped a five-game losing streak for Villanova, which is now 2-8 overall, 1-6 in the Colonial Athletic Association.

Due to injury problems at Villanova, Polony has been pushed ahead of schedule and has played in six games. He is 55-for-98 passing for 574 yards and seven touchdowns with four interceptions.

He also threw for three touchdowns, including a 60-yarder, the previous Saturday in a 41-25 loss to Maine.

Villanova is off this week before concluding its season against Delaware on Nov. 19 at PPL Park in Chester.
