Philadelphia Magazine Re-Launches “The Philly Post” As a Stand-Alone Site
for Daily News and Opinion
A new way for Philadelphians to get their news every day
PHILADELPHIA– Philadelphia magazine, one of the country’s most successful and honored city magazines, has re-launched its popular daily blog, The Philly Post, as a stand-alone site for daily news and opinion in Philadelphia.
“The way people get information is changing dramatically, and we’re thrilled to give Philadelphians an exciting, provocative new destination for daily headlines, features and commentary,” said Tom McGrath, the magazine’s editor. “Journalism is being revolutionized, and we intend to be at the forefront of what’s happening in Philadelphia.”
McGrath said the new site–which can be viewed at thephillypost.com–would appeal to the magazine’s traditional readership of educated, affluent, and influential Philadelphians while also connecting with a younger generation. “We think there’s a huge space in the market for a daily site that’s smart, opionated and plugged-in to what’s happening in Philly and beyond. We want to be your daily newspaper–only without the paper part.”
David Lipson, president of Metrocorp, parent company of Philadelphia and The Philly Post, sees enormous opportunity in the digital space. “Our monthly magazine is as vibrant as ever, but the web and mobile allow us to connect with our audience on a daily basis,” he said.
The newly designed Philly Post site features several differences from the previous blog, which launched on phillymag.com in March 2010 and has tripled the web site’s traffic:
* A separate Philly Post home page, featuring a bold marquee with top stories updated several times per day
* A new blog, The Scoop, which aggragates headlines throughout the day
* A second new blog, The Scene, featuring gossip and photos from HughE Dillon and other contributors
* “Twitterdelphia,” aggragating tweets from notable Philadelphians
* More visible links to the magazine’s other digital brands, including food blog Foobooz; health and fitness site BeWellPhilly; LGBT site GPhilly; and bridal site Philadelphia Wedding.
Edited by Janine White, the magazine’s digital editorial director, The Philly Post will continue to feature a strong roster of Philadelphia journalists and personalities. Among the contributors are former Inquirer writers Paul Davies, Gail Shister and Patrick Kerkstra; TV anchor Larry Mendte; sportswriter and broadcaster Michael Bradley; attorney Michael Coard; former Philadelphia Weekly staffers Tim Whitaker, Liz Spikol and Dan McQuade; and award-winning Philly Mag contributors Sandy Hingston, Robert Huber, Michael Callahan, Victor Fiorillo and Richard Rys.
A Philly Post app will be available within a few weeks. Redesigns of the magazine’s other digital properties will be unveiled in the next several months.
