Gary Schultz, former Penn State vice president, had Nazareth ties

FROM THE EXPRESS TIMES

When he received his Nazareth Area High School diploma in 1967, former Penn State Vice President Gary Schultz left behind many clubs and committees in which he participated.

According to the 1967 “Comet” yearbook, Schultz was a college prep student, class historian, member of the prom committee, member of student council and member of a political club. He served as junior class president. Schultz was not involved in any sports.

Few Nazareth Area High School alumni still living locally remember Schultz, a Nazareth native. Some said they can place him, but were not directly involved in clubs with him. Others said they stuck to their own grades and rarely befriended students in others.

Nazareth Area School District Superintendent Victor Lesky, a Penn State graduate himself, didn’t know Schultz. Lesky came on board in the district in 1976.

Schultz and Athletic Director Tim Curley earlier this month surrendered on charges of perjury and failure to report abuse. Schultz, Penn State’s senior vice president for business and finance, and Curley are accused of failing to alert police to complaints that former assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky was sexually abusing boys. They are also charged with lying to a state grand jury investigating the complaints.

Both stepped down from their positions after meeting with university trustees.
