Whitehall grad Chris Polony to start for Villanova on Saturday

FROM KEITH GROLLER

According to a story by Terry Toohey of the Delaware County Daily Times, Whitehall grad Chris Polony, a true freshman, will start for Villanova on Saturday when the Wildcats play Monmouth in their home opener on the Main Line.

Villanova is 0-2 for the first time since 2006 after being routed by Temple and Towson.

The Wildcats have been hurt by seven turnovers and major injuries, including a third-degree shoulder separation by starting quarterback Dustin Thomas that is expected to keep him out of action the entire season.

Walk-on senior Christian Culicerto replaced Thomas against Towson and was 10-for-19 pass for 95 yards and a touchdown.

But coach Andy Talley, already thinking about the future, said during the weekly CAA coaches teleconference that he was going to go with Polony, who was supposed to be redshirted this season.

"We prepared Chris (Polony) as the backup, but decided to go with Christian to maintain his redshirt," Talley told Toohey. "With Christian being a senior and Chris a true freshman, it makes sense to get the young guy ready for the future. Christian did a great job, but we need to groom the young guy."

The 6-foot-3, 210-pound Polony led the Zephyrs into the District 11 4A finals last season.

Monmouth had a bye week after absorbing a 49-24 season-opening loss to Lehigh on Sept. 3.
