Sands table games are top moneymaker of state's casinos

FROM THE MORNING CALL

Either people are remarkably bad gamblers in Bethlehem, or the Sands casino has become the No. 1 place to play tables in Pennsylvania.

Sands tables games like craps, blackjack and roulette took in $10.8 million in August, according to figures released this week by the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board.

The amount was not only more than double what the casino took it last August and the highest monthly total any casino has ever taken in during Pennsylvania's brief history of table games, but Sands tables took in more than a $1 million more than tables at a Parx Casino that some analysts thought could not be overtaken.

Parx, located just outside Philadelphia, sits in the heart of the state's largest population and has been the state's most lucrative since it opened nearly five years ago.

Sands Casino Resort Bethlehem pulled in $10.8 million, followed by $9.7 million pulled in by Parx, $7.5 million at Harrah's Chester Casino, $6.1 million at SugarHouse in Philadelphia and $5.6 million at Rivers inPittsburgh.

Table games at Mount Airy Casino, in Monroe County brought $3.4 million in August.

The previous highest total in Pennsylvania came in April, when Parx brought in $10.4 million.
