Lehigh University football team beats Princeton University

FROM EXPRESS TIMES

Senior quarterback Chris Lum threw three touchdown passes to junior receiver Ryan Spadola as the Lehigh University football team beat Princeton 34-22 tonight at Princeton Stadium in New Jersey.

After the No. 16 Mountain Hawks (2-1) went three-and-out on their first two possessions and punted on the next, Lum found the All-American wideout for a 49-yard catch-and-run down the middle of the field as Lehigh took a 7-3 advantage.

The two hooked up two drives later on a 12-yard catch on the right side as Spadola was sprung by a nice block by fullback Sean Farrell.

Act 3 came early in the third quarter.

As the Lehigh defense forced the Tigers (0-1) to go three-and-out, Lum wasted little time finding his favorite target.

On the next play from scrimmage, Spadola was in the endzone after hauling in a 46-yard pass and Lehigh led 20-6.

The Mountain Hawks struggled on special teams, especially in the kicking game. Punter Tim Divers, who was the placekicker in place of Jake Peery, had a PAT and 39-yard field goal blocked.

It didn't help that long snapper Kyle Lechner (Delaware Valley Regional) was out with hip pointer.

Lum, who has at least four TD passes in all three games this year, hooked up with sophomore fullback Sean Farrell for a 2-yard score with 11:11 remaining as the Mountain Hawks extended their lead to 27-9.

On the ensuing kickoff, the Tigers answered back as Ivan Charbonneau ran 92 yards for a touchdown -- Princeton's first return TD since 2005 -- cutting the lead to 27-16 with 10:57 on the clock.

Lum was 28-for-38 for 384 yards and four TDS, while Spadola ended up with 214 yards on nine receptions.

Princeton freshman running back Chuck Dibilio (Nazareth Area) ran for 86 yards on 14 attempts with a 26-yard touchdown reception in his first collegiate game.

The shovel pass from QB Tommy Wornham cut the deficit to 27-22 with 6:49 remaining. The ensuing Tigers' two-point conversion was no good.

Lehigh went 61 yards in 10 plays later in the quarter and scored a key insurance touchdown by Keith Sherman with 1:54 left.
