Groller-Zambelli Challenge goes into the classroom

FROM KEITH GROLLER

The idea of the Groller-Zambelli prediction contest is to get more people reading the paper and stirring more interest in area high school football.

Credit Morning Call freelancer Mike Blouse for getting younger readers interested in The Morning Call and in high school football.

Blouse is a student-teacher in Mr. Bellucci's fourth-grade class in the Bethlehem Area School District and he has the kids participating in the Groller-Zambelli Challenge every week.

"We have a class vote and whichever team gets the most votes, that's the team we pick," Blouse said.

Blouse said he gives the kids a little info to help them.

"We're currently in 31st place out of 600-some teams," Blouse said.

Last week the entry known as "mrbclass" had seven out of 10 correct, losing on Nazareth, Palmerton and Saucon Valley.

"The students really get into the contest and seeing how we do each week," Blouse said.Blouse2

Blouse and Bellucci helped to turn last Friday into "Football Friday" at the school. Liberty coach Dave Brown, at Mike's request, came out to the school to speak to the fourth and fifth grade classes for 40 minutes.

Brown gave out t-shirts and napsacks.

"The kids loved it," Blouse said. "The kids loved it. Some of them gave coach Brown a hug and shook his hands."

Some pictures from Coach Brown's visit to the kids at James Buchanan Elementary School, and yes, that's Mr. Blouse in the Lions shirt.
