Frew expected to be named Becahi's boys basketball coach on Tuesday

FROM KEITH GROLLER

Michael Frew, who spent the last four seasons at Pen Argyl, is expected to be named Bethlehem Catholic's boys basketball coach at a press conference at 3 p.m. Tuesday.

Frew is a 31-year-old Moravian College graduate. He followed his own playing career by spending five seasons as one of Jim Walker's assistants with the Greyhounds before taking the Pen Argyl job in May of 2007.

Frew's teams went 22-68 at Pen Argyl, including 4-18 in the recently completed 2010-11 season.

Pen Argyl's best season under Frew came in 2007-08 when they went 11-13 and just missed qualifying for the district tournament.

Frew, well-liked in the local coaching community, was instrumental in promoting the Colonial League's "Coaches vs. Cancer" program last season.

He is a graduate of Glen Ridge High School in Essex County, N.J. He never started at Moravian, but regularly contributed and was a co-captain as a senior in 2001-2002.

Reliable sources indicate that other finalists for the position included Bob Wootsick and Dan Eddinger, who were both members of Becahi's staff last, along with Kyle Hutnik, the son of former Becahi coach Jim Hutnik. Tom Mosser, a former Becahi assistant now at Freedom, was also reportedly in the mix.
