Hot Dog Showdown preview: Potts' Doggie Shop in Nazareth serves up a filling dog

http://www.lehighvalleylive.com/food/index.ssf/2012/06/hot_dog_showdown_preview_potts.html FROM THE EXPRESS TIMES Chili. Mustard. Onions. That's the dog the judges got at Potts' Doggie Shop in Nazareth. It's their specialty, but was it enough to wow the Hot Dog Showdown judges? Masked Muncher Pott’s in Nazareth slings my kind of hot dog with my kind of toppings. As far as I’m concerned, it’s difficult to go wrong with mustard, onion and a thin chili sauce as the finishing touches of a good hot dog. But the right combination of the three, the flavor of the chili sauce and the way the dog’s cooked make perfection elusive. We’ll see other hot dog shops deploying the same techniques in this competition. Whether Pott’s will rise above the rest remains to be seen. Jim "Top Dog" Deegan Potts' is a small place on South Broad Street, but it's a name that stands among the giants on the Lehigh Valley hot dog scene. Potts' uses only Berks franks, and the seven Potts' shops scattered throughout the region buy about 1 million dogs a year, said Mike Chelius, a sales manager for the Berks Packing Co. in Reading, Pa. Berks also supplies the dogs for the IronPigs' Coca-Cola Park, and doesn't add poultry like a lot of its competitors, Chelius said. The weiner is just one ingredient in making a great hot dog. What happens after it's placed in the bun is important, too. I'll save my thoughts on Potts' best, a hot dog with everything, for next week's Showdown review. Kelly "One Bite" Huth I have to admit, I was a little nervous about these hot dogs with so many toppings on them, but I was pleasantly surprised. The trio is the shop's bread and butter. Plus the folks and crowd at Potts' were so friendly, it made for a great visit.
