Northampton Community College graduates more than 800 students

He told the more than 800 graduates gathered in the college’s Spartan Center that while crafting his speech he thought about prior speakers that resonated with students. Scott is retiring at the end of June after a 36 year career at the Bethlehem Township, Pa., school. The class of 2012 is the largest graduating class in school history with 888 spring graduates and 755 winter grads. All of the best speeches featured true stories that closely mirrored graduates own experiences, he said. So, Tuesday Scott chose to tell the stories of the Class of 2012. “I have found that our most successful alumni possess three common characteristics: they are persistent, they are incredibly curious and their lives and actions are filled with acts of kindness,” Scott said. “The students I am about to single out, I believe, illustrate these traits.” Nursing graduate LaToya Brown exemplifies persistence, he said. She’s graduating with a 3.92 grade point average and already has a job at Lehigh Valley Hospital, Scott said. “Things are going well for LaToya but that was not always the case,” he said. “While in high school she was told she was not college material.” Brown overcame many obstacles before enrolling at Northampton four years ago, Scott said. “LaToya found a way, just as many of you have,” he said. Northampton Community College's Board of Trustees surprised retiring President Arthur Scott and Sue Kubik, who is president of institutional advancement and executive director of the NCC Foundation, with honorary titles of president emeritus and and administrator emeritus respectively. The two are married. He urged graduates to keep finding a way; to not be deterred by the economy, the world situation or their personal hurdles. “Believe in the beauty of your dream and don't let anything stand in the way of you achieving that dream,” Scott said after quoting Eleanor Roosevelt. “Continue to have a hunger to achieve. Don't ever give up. “ Successful graduates are also very curious like graduate Tia Herawati, whose mother was watching the ceremony live from Indonesia. “From the moment she stepped off the plane last July, she has been asking questions and trying to explore as much as possible during her short stay in America,” Scott said. Herawati views every moment as a learning moment, he said. If she has a free afternoon she hops on a bus to visit a new place or if she meets a veteran she picks their brain. Scott challenged them to always be curious. “Successful people never rest; they are always thinking about what is next, what else can they learn,” he said. Finally, Scott recognized graduates Elliot Freeman, of Bangor, Josie Velazquez, of Easton, and Afghanistan veteran Justin Shellhammer, who he said all took very different paths to reach graduation. But they all have lived lives of kindness, they volunteer and help others, Scott said. Scott reminded the grads that acclaim fades but we all remember those who helped us along the way and cared for us. “These are the people you will never forget,” Scott said. Scott said goodbye to his final class simply: “May each of you make a rich and fulfilling life for yourselves.” They responded with a standing ovation.
