http://blogs.mcall.com/groller/2012/05/moravians-softball-team-headed-to-union-nj-for-ncaa-regional.html FROM KEITH GROLLER There's a ceremony, actually two of them, planned for tomorrow in which the IronPigs are presenting checks to the Allentown School District to help sports programs at Allen and Dieruff. Here's the release from ASD and kudos to the IronPigs and IronPigs Charities for caring about the community. ASD Foundation to Recognize IronPigs Charities for High School Athletics Gifts DATE: Wednesday, May 9th TIME/LOCATION: 3:00 p.m. @ William Allen HS, 126 N. 17th St., Allentown 3:30 p.m. @ Louis E. Dieruff HS, 815 N. Irving St., Allentown IronPigs Charities has donated a total of $12,000 over the past two years to the ASD Foundation for the improvement of baseball and softball equipment at Louis E. Dieruff and William Allen High Schools. IronPigs representatives, including General Manager Kurt Landes and Director of Community Relations Sarah Marten, will visit both schools on May 9 to observe the improvements funded by the donation. There will be a photo opportunity at William Allen HS at 3:00 p.m., after which the group will travel Louis E. Dieruff HS for another photo opportunity. Dieruff HS received $6,000 in January 2011 to fund construction of a new outdoor batting cage at Irving Park that will help the Dieruff baseball and softball teams better utilize time and space and eliminate the need to bus the junior varsity teams to another venue to practice, cutting transportation costs and promoting team unity. The batting cage will also be available for the teams to practice during the off-season and open to community teams that practice there. The remaining funds were used to purchase four portable backboards, which will be utilized by the boys’ and girls’ basketball teams as well as the physical education department. The portable backboards will enable a more efficient use of time and space by the students. William Allen HS received $6,000 in January 2012, used to purchase new pitching machines to replace the two run-down machines that the school had purchased in the early 1980s, along with replacement nets for the outdoor softball and baseball batting cages, whose nets had suffered significant weather and natural damage over the past three years.
