Somebody Do Something: Moore Township road is county's 'most dangerous'

FROM THE EXPRESS TIMES

As the Somebody Do Something feature has demonstrated, there are numerous roads in the Lehigh Valley that motorists deem unsafe. They've asked for traffic signals to be adjusted, road surfaces to be smoothed and pedestrian access to be improved.

Of all of the area streets you've traversed, which would you deem the "most dangerous" in the region?

One reader says it's Smith Gap Road in Moore Township, so that's where the Somebody Do Something spotlight of shame shines this week.

John Stempa describes this rural road as "a mile and a half of potholes and washed out dirt, with 12% grade, and NO guard rails. Over 300 people signed a petition to make this road safer!"

It runs north-south between Millheim Road and Blue Mountain, at the border of Northampton and Monroe counties.

According to Stempa, former Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Ridge offered Moore Township officials financial assistance to make the road safer, but they did nothing.

Have you driven on this road? Do you agree that it's the most dangerous in the county? What needs to be done to make it safer?

To nominate another road as "most dangerous," post a comment below. Or share another trouble spot, such as a rundown building or confusing intersection, to appear in a future installment of Somebody Do Something. It's a regular feature on lehighvalleylive.com that aims to expose a problem, generate public discussion and, hopefully, nudge those with the power to fix it.
