Lehigh University wrestlers rally past Penn in EIWA opener

FROM THE EXPRESS TIMES

Lehigh University's 10th-ranked wrestling team fell behind early in this afternoon's EIWA match against the University of Pennsylvania at The Palestra in Philadelphia but rallied for a 21-15 triumph over the 22nd-ranked Quakers.

The victory is the Mountain Hawks' fifth straight win.

Second-ranked 285-pounder Zach Rey lifted Lehigh (5-2, 1-0 EIWA) to its first lead at 18-15 with a third-period pin of Penn's Anthony DiLonardo, and then freshman Mason Beckman wrapped the win up with a 3-2 decision at 125, the match's final bout, over Geoffrey Bostany of the Quakers (3-2, 1-1).

"It was awesome that I could win when it came down to me, but it was the team that earned the win," said Beckman, whose decisive point came from riding time. "I just went out and did my job. We lost a couple of matches we'd thought we'd win, but this is a huge match to win in the conference opener."

Lehigh won six of the last seven bouts, with nationally-ranked Brandon Hatchett (No. 5 at 165), Robert Hamlin (No. 1 at 184) and Joe Kennedy (No. 8 at 197) all posting decisions.

Lehigh will host Penn State in the 100th match in that storied rivalry 7 p.m. Friday night at Stabler Arena.
