FROM THE EXPRESS TIMES
Despite Michael Vick's career-high passing day, the Philadelphia Eagles fell to 1-3 on the season with a shocking 24-23 defeat to the San Francisco 49ers this afternoon at Lincoln Financial Field.
The Eagles (2-2) blew a 23-3 third-quarter lead thanks to a leaky defense that surrendered big plays by quarterback Alex Smith (21-for-33, 291 yards, 2 TDs) and 127 yards rushing to Frank Gore, and helped considerably by two fourth-quarter field goals missed by Eagles rookie Alex Henery from 33 and 39 yards.
It was fitting symbolism that the 49ers took the lead on a point-after touchdown by David Akers, cast aside by the Eagles this summer in favor of Henery.
Vick threw for 416 yards, a career high, but struggled to cash in in the red zone, where the Birds made five trips that ended in field goal tries.
The Birds built a 23-3 lead in the third quarter, which would have been a much bigger cushion had Philadelphia not settled for field goals three times inside the 20-yard line.
The 49ers (2-2) crept back into the game at 23-17 fueled by big plays.
Michael Vick and DeSean Jackson renewed acquaintances after largely missing each other in last week's loss to the Giants where Jackson caught just two passes for 30 yards. Jackson caught six passes for 171 yards but no touchdowns.
Jason Babin posted a career-high three sacks, the first Eagle to have three sacks since Trent Cole against Detroit on Sept. 23, 2007.
