FROM KEITH GROLLER
Even Penn State fans would probably have to admit that Northwestern quarterback Dan Persa is a class act after the way he has battled back from his Achilles injury.
He has been a class person throughout his high school and college careers.
Now the fifth-year senior from Liberty High School is up for a national award and fans can help him get it.
It's something called the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award and it is about saluting a student-athlete who shines in the classroom, community, with their character and during competition.
Persa is one of 10 finalists.
The other candidates are Emmanuel Acho, a linebacker from Texas; Jake Bequette, a defensive end from Arkansas; Drew Butler, a punter from Georgia; Kirk Cousins, the quarterback from Michigan State; Austin Davis, quarterback from Southern Mississippi; John Dowd, a guard from Navy; Chase Minnifield, a cornerback from Virginia; Nate Potter, an offensive tackle from Boise State and Dawson Zimmerman, a punter from Clemson.
The fans vote counts for one-third of the process. The other two-thirds is decided by Division I coaches and national media members.
Past winners include Ohio State's James Laurinaitis, now with the Rams, in 2008; Tim Tebow in 2009 and Navy quarterback Ricky Dobbs last year.

At last glance, Cousins was leading the vote with 27 percent. Persa had 5.9 percent.
