Former Nazareth and Liberty football coach dies

FROM KEITH GROLLER

Dick Ortwein, who coached both Nazareth and Liberty to District 11 football championships, died Sunday in Cape Coral, Fla. Ortwein was 70.

Ortwein, a 1959 Bethlehem Catholic graduate, had a career mark of 100-63-1. He was a successful coach at Kutztown High before coming to Nazareth where he led the Blue Eagles to the Colonial League championship in 1985 and District 11 titles in 1988 and 1989. He resigned the Nazareth post in January of 1990 to become the head coach at Liberty and coached the Hurricanes for six seasons.

He was 34-35 at Liberty, going 5-6 in 1990 and 1-10 in 1991, before things turned around.

His 1992 squad went 7-4 and his 1993 team went 9-4 and reached the Eastern Conference finals. The following year, his team went 8-5 and won the District 11 4A title, but was routed by Downingtown 41-14 in the state playoffs.

Liberty dropped to 4-6 in his final season in 1995.

Ortwein then went on to be an assistant under Mike Donnelly at Muhlenberg College.

"I consider Coach Ortwein to be one of the most important men in my life," said Jason Brader, who played for Ortwein at Liberty and Muhlenberg and now runs the very successful FASST (Funcational Athletic Speed Strength Training) program for area athletes. "He taught me a lot of life lessons. He taught me how to be a man."
