Dylan Evans, Pen Argyl football team runs over Catasauqua

FROM THE EXPRESS TIMES

A look at the Pen Argyl Area High School football team's offensive numbers against Catasauqua reveals that the attack was one-dimensional.

Actually, it seemed to be one-manned.

The undefeated Green Knights dominated Catasauqua, 27-0, in a Colonial League contest on Friday night at Alumni Field as Dylan Evans rushed for 334 yards and two touchdowns on 42 carries.

"It's not really big for me. It's nice to have it, but it should be a nice accomplishment for the offensive line," Evans said. "Without them, I don't have a yard. That's something that I let them know."

After a lackluster first half left Pen Argyl (7-0, 7-0) with a 6-0 advantage, the Green Knights switched to a single-wing formation, in which the senior running back received the snap directly.

The approach paid dividends quickly as Evans ripped off 22 yards on the first play from scrimmage in the third quarter and capped off a nine-play drive with a 27-yard touchdown, which made the score 12-0.

"It's something that the kids work on constantly and they enjoy running it," Pen Argyl coach Paul Reduzzi said. "I think it was the right time tonight to let them get some reps in it. The size of our line and the physicality up front helps with that greatly."

Catasauqua (5-2, 5-2) responded by driving the ball down to the Pen Argyl 6-yard line before Evans stopped the drive, and any Rough Rider momentum, by picking off a pass from Jake Bloszinsky in the end zone.

"Coach Reduzzi gives us film of all the passing routes and that's one that I watched particularly -- how it was spaced and everything -- and I just sat in that window," Evans said.

"We talk to the kids (on defense) constantly about getting to the ball, stripping the ball and putting the ball on the ground," Reduzzi said. "Our defense reads well, moves well and they did a good job with that."

Pen Argyl, which gained all of its 432 yards on the ground, marched down the field twice more in the fourth quarter with drives that ended with a 1-yard plunge from Michael Racciato and a reverse-sweep for a score by conventional quarterback Conor Gum from 6 yards out.

Evans, who also added a fumble recovery, credited his offensive line for his success and named Kirby Mutton, who provided him with the direct snaps, and 5-foot-10, 260-pound J.T. Krincek, who is in the backfield out of the single-wing, in particular.

"It's an unbalanced formation and we have a slot back in the backfield -- so, we have three running backs -- and J.T. (who plays slot back) did a tremendous job," Evans said. "They asked him to play that this year and he had no idea what to do. But, he learned it well and, I would say, perfected it."

An interception and a fumble stalled drives by the Green Knights in the first quarter, but Evans got them on track by carrying the ball seven consecutive times and bulldozing into the end zone from the 4 to get his team on the scoreboard.

Ra'Von and Sa'Quon Burton paced Catasauqua with 37 and 35 rushing yards, respectively. Bloszinsky finished 9-for-16 for 56 yards through the air.

Racciato tallied 62 rushing yards and Gum added 34 more for Pen Argyl.
