The Phillies off-season housecleaning continues.
Catcher Paul Hoover, infielder Greg Dobbs and pitcher Jamie Moyer became free agents Thursday, opening up two spots on the Phillies' 40-man roster.
Hoover, who spent most of the season with the IronPigs and joined the Phllies as the third catcher in September, elected to become a free agent after he was outrighted back to Triple-A. The 34-year-old has played most of the last two seasons with Lehigh Valley.
Dobbs became a free agent when the Phillies declined to offer the 32-year-old salary arbitration. Claimed off waivers from Seattle in January, 2007, Dobbs was one of the National League's top pinch-hitters during his first three seasons with the Phillies but slumped to .196 in 183 at-bats this season. He was twice sent down to the IronPigs, clearing waivers both times after being designated for assignment.
Moyer, obtained from Seattle for two minor leaguers in August, 2006, was 9-9 with a 4.14 ERA in 19 starts before suffering a season-ending elbow injury in July. The Souderton native, who will turn 48 on Nov. 18, earned 56 of his 267 career victories with the Phillies. He is 36th on baseball's career victory list.
The roster reshaping began earlier this week when the Phillies declined a $4.5-million option on left-handed reliever J.C. Romero.
Jose Contreras, Chad Durbin and Jayson Werth are also free agents this winter.
