Liberty High School starts fast, routs Bethlehem Catholic High School, 42-0.

BETHLEHEM | Liberty High School coach Dave Brown made an observation heading into the game against Bethlehem Catholic: If his Hurricanes reach the district playoffs, Brown's not so sure any of their previous opponents will look forward to a rematch.

Why? To put it bluntly, Liberty's hardly the same football team that stepped on to the field in late summer.

Friday night was further evidence. The Hurricanes looked like they had a plan from the opening play, when junior Stephon Font-Toomer intercepted a pass and returned it to the Bethlehem Catholic 12-yard line.

Liberty went on to win 42-0 at Bethlehem Area School District Stadium and improved to 5-3 overall and 4-3 in the Lehigh Valley Conference.

"We were a pretty young team," junior quarterback Jim McCarthy said. "We have a lot of juniors, and we had a lot of inexperience. As the year goes on, everyone's getting experience and it's paying off."

Facing a Bethlehem Catholic squad depleted by injuries, Liberty capitalized on three turnovers and scored all of its points before halftime. The Hurricanes rushed for 221 yards and also went 4-for-4 through the air.

Bethlehem Catholic dropped to 2-6 overall and 2-5 in the LVC.

"They've got a lot of guys hurt, and that's tough," Brown said. "You take six or seven starters off any football team, and that's trouble."

Liberty, meanwhile, looked sharp from the moment Font-Toomer picked off Luke Petro's pass just seconds into the first quarter.

"He read the pass like he was supposed to," McCarthy said. "He was in the right position at the right time, and he caught it. It set up the game."
