One killed by lightning in Pocono Raceway parking lot

http://blogs.mcall.com/groller/ FROM KEITH GROLLER A sad day at Pocono Raceway. Several hours after Jeff Gordon was declared the winner of the rain-shortened Pennsylvania 400, it was learned that one fan who was struck by lightning in the parking lot behind the grandstand has died at Pocono Medical Center. A total of 10 people were injured as a fast-moving storm enveloped the area and heavy lightning and wind hit the area. It was so fast and strong that it prompted race officials to bring an almost immediate halt to the race after 98 of the scheduled 160 laps. Various reports about how many were injured came out before the news broke about the fatality. "One of the injured has been declared deceased at the Pocono Medical Center by Dr. Peter Favini, the medical director of the ER down there," said Pocono Raceway president and CEO Brandon Igdalsky. "The five other people who were being evaluated here have been transported for further evaluation. “Unfortunately, a member of our raceway family here has passed away. On behalf of myself and the entire family and everybody here, it’s really heartfelt that this happened.”
