Liberty beats Emmaus 4-0 for first district softball title ever

http://blogs.mcall.com/groller/ FROM KEITH GROLLER Erin Wilson shut out Emmaus for the second time in this softball postseason and Ashley Malek slugged a two-run home run to help Liberty beat Emmaus 4-0 on Thursday night at Pates for the District 11 4A title. It is the Hurricanes first district title and their first championship since winning the 1993 East Penn Conference crown. Malek's two-run homer started the scoring in the secodn inning. Alyshia Dellatore doubled and scored on an error in the third and Mariah Kondravy capped the scoring with a RBI double in the fifth. It was Kondravy who defeated Emmaus with a grand slam in April and knocked in the game-winning run with a triple in the ninth inning in the LVC semis, a 1-0 Green Hornets victory. Liberty (20-4) moves on to the state tournament on Monday, back at Pates Park against CB South. Emmaus, denied in its bid for a sixth district title, ends its season at 17-7.

Former Lehigh University wrestling coach Greg Strobel to be honored

http://www.lehighvalleylive.com/lehigh/index.ssf/2012/05/strobel_to_be_honored.html FROM THE EXPRESS TIMES Former Lehigh University wrestling coach Greg Strobel will be recognized as a Distinguished Member of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame this weekend in Stillwater, Okla. Strobel coached Lehigh from 1994 through 2008 and amassed an 189-83-1 dual-meet record. He led the Mountain Hawks to six EIWA championships, including five in a row from 2002 through 2006. During Strobel's tenure, Lehigh won 28 individual EIWA titles and 30 All-American honors. He coached two NCAA champions: Nazareth's Rob Rohn in 2002 and Troy Letters in 2004. As a wrestler at Scappoose (Oregon) High School, Strobel won three state championships at 191 pounds and, at one point during his senior year, Strobel actually coached the team. Strobel then wrestled at Oregon State, compiled a 124-5-1 record, won national championships in 1973 and 1974 and finished his career on a 77-match winning streak. Prior to coming to Lehigh, Strobel was the national team director for USA Wrestling (1983-91) and was a coach of the 2000 U.S. Olympic freestyle team. In 2009, Strobel was named Man of the Year by USA Wrestling.

It all unravels for Becahi in the 10th; lose to Pottsville 5-1 in 3A softball final

http://blogs.mcall.com/groller/ FROM KEITH GROLLER It was a classic battle for nine innings. But with the start of the International Rule in the top of the 10th inning on Thursday afternoon at Pates Park, things changed in more ways than one for Bethlehem Catholic. The International Rule means you start the inning with a runner on second base (the player who made the last out of the previous inning). But the Lady Tide didn't need that benefit. Three hits and three Becahi errors helped to produce four runs and the Golden Hawks couldn't solve Pottsville ace Steph Sweat in the bottom of the 10th and Pottsville happily returned home to Schuylkill County with a 5-1 win and the program's third district softball title -- first since 2005. A sacrifce bunt moved the initial Pottsville runner (Julino Bulino) to third. She scored on Kristen Wentzell's single to center. But things got much worse for Becahi (17-7) as an error followed and then two errors ensued after Caitlyn Herndon singled to left. Morgan Alisauckas singled to right to score one more run to cap the uprising. Becahi was limited to five hits by Sweat. The Golden Hawks got their lone run in the sixth when Lauren Visconti singled, stole second, moved to third on an error and scored on Jackie DeSarro's sac fly. Pottsville (23-2) moves on to the state tournament on Monday against the District 12 champ. "The International Rule didn't bother us because we've practiced and scrimmaged with runners on second base a lot, but we just kind of fell apart," said Becahi coach Rich Mazza. "We knew Steph Sweat tries to get you with high pitches and what the heck did we do? We went after just about every high pitch she threw. It's disappointing today, but overall, I am proud of how we turned it around and had a good season."

Dan Shepherd pitches and hits Nazareth Area High School baseball team to District 11 Class AAAA title

http://www.lehighvalleylive.com/sports/index.ssf/2012/05/dan_shepherd_pitches_and_hits.html FROM THE EXPRESS TIMES Dan Shepherd and Dan Horvath have developed quite a camaraderie. The Nazareth Area High School pitchers combined on a four-hitter and Shepherd stroked a two-run fifth-inning double Wednesday to spark the Blue Eagles to a 2-1 victory over Liberty in the District 11 Class AAAA title game at Coca-Cola Park. It's the second straight district title for Nazareth (21-4), which plays the third-place team from District 1, either Upper Dublin or Hatboro-Horsham, in a PIAA first-round game on Monday. "This game was typical of our season," Nazareth coach Jon Lock said. "We've battled all year. This 2012 Nazareth baseball team is what 'team' is all about. They just don't quit. It's a great bunch of guys." Shepherd started and allowed one run on four hits through 5 1/3 innings. Horvath entered with two runners on in the sixth and recorded the last five outs for the save. "We're like a duo," said Shepherd, who's emerged as the staff ace since Karl Keglovits broke his finger nine days ago. "We talk about it every day. I told him before the game 'Dan, it's me and you, buddy.' " Trailing 2-1, Liberty (21-4) threatened with one out in the six when Pat Donnelly blooped a single and James Bertolotti walked. Horvath came on and retired Pete Daland on a liner to shortstop and Jake Tone on a slicing line drive to left. "(Horvath) comes in and pounds the strike zone," Lock said. "We have a lot of confidence in him late in games." Horvath retired the side in order in the seventh inning, including a strikeout of Eric Chavanne to end it. "I feel stronger as a reliever than a starter," said Horvath, a junior. "I don't know why but I like pressure, especially when the fans are cheering. I wanted to do everything I could to help the seniors keep playing." Horvath received an assist from center fielder Anthony Gaetaniello, who made a sliding catch to rob Robert Bertolotti of a hit leading off the seventh. "I knew (Gaetaniello) had the wheels," Horvath said. "He does it all the time. He's quite a defensive player." Liberty took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning when Donnelly tripled and eventually stole home on the back end of a double steal. Dalan, the Hurricanes' starting pitcher, retired the first two batters in the fifth inning before Gaetaniello singled, Mike Garzillo walked and Shepherd drove them in with his double up the gap in left-center. "You have to give (Nazareth) credit," Pitsilos said. "They played better today. My biggest disappointment is these kids not being able to realize what they worked so hard for. I might be back here again but these guys won't get the chance. This is the best bunch of seniors I've had."

Nazareth Area High School baseball team tops Liberty in District 11 Class AAAA title game

http://www.lehighvalleylive.com/sports/index.ssf/2012/05/nazareth_area_high_school_base_18.html FROM THE EXPRESS TIMES Dan Shepherd allowed one run through 5-1/3 innings and socked a two-run double in the fifth inning tonight to lead Nazareth Area High School to a 2-1 victory over Liberty in the District 11 Class AAAA baseball title game at Coca-Cola Park. It's the second straight district title for Nazareth (21-4), which plays the third place team from District 1, either Upper Dublin or Hatboro-Horsham, in a PIAA first round game on Monday. Liberty (21-4) took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning when Pat Donnelly stole home on the back end of a double steal. Hurricanes pitcher Pete Daland retired the first two batters in the fifth inning before Anthony Gaetaniello singled, Mike Garzillo walked, and Shepherd drove them in with his double up the gap in left-center. Dan Horvath recorded the last five outs to pick up the save. "This game was typical of our season," Nazareth coach Jon Lock said. "We've battled all year. This 2012 Nazareth baseball team is what 'team' is all about. They just don't quit. It's a great bunch of guys."

District 11 softball: Emmaus-Liberty Part III for 4A championship

http://blogs.mcall.com/groller/ FROM KEITH GROLLER Two of the best games of this 2012 softball season were the previous meetings between Emmaus and Liberty. The first one was here at Pates Park on April 25, a 7-5 Liberty win when Mariah Kondravy hit a grand slam in the top of the seventh inning to rally the Hurricanes. The other was in the LVC semis on May 16, a 1-0 Hurricanes win in nine innings, again with Kondravy driving in the winning run with a triple and Erin Wilson pitching a gem. The third meeting between the two is now set and it's Thursday night at 7 in the 4A championship game back here at Pates. Liberty, in the final for the first time since 1993, is going for its first district title ever. Emmaus is going for its sixth crown. The Green Hornets earned their shot with a 1-0 win over Northampton in nine innings tonight in the 4A semifinals. Emmaus pitchers Rachel Brown and Olivia Marcks combined on a four-hitter and the Green Hornets finally got to K-Kid ace Marly Laubach in the ninth after being shut down on one hit through eight innings. With one out, Emily Hockman, who had the only the Emmaus hit through the regulation seven, walked. Anna Corch moved her up to second with a single to right and then Cassidy Sullivan punched a single to right. It was close at the plate, but Hockman beat the tag of Northampton catcher Katie Clancy. "I don't think I've ever been this emotional after a game," said K-Kids coach Sally Whittaker-Kahan, who was fighting back tears after her team had its season end at 14-9. "We have such great group of seniors and they were absolutely amazing. This was the true meaning of what a team is all about. We went through some stuff this year, but the kids always picked each other up no matter what was going on. These girls were just awesome." As for Thursday night, Emmaus coach John Eyer said: "It's going to be a tough game, no doubt about it. We know their pitcher Erin Wilson and they know what we have. It's going to come down to playing good defense." The champions in each class go on to the state tournament, which begins Monday. The 3A game between Pottsville and Becahi is set for 2 p.m.

District 11 softball: Tough day so far for the Colonial League

http://blogs.mcall.com/groller/ FROM KEITH GROLLER Three early scores are in and it's not good news for the Colonial League. In 2A semifinal games, Pine Grove 3, Palmerton 2; North Schuylkill 7, Pen Argyl 2. In 3A: Pottsville 5, Saucon Valley 2. That sets Thursday's championship game schedule as: 3A final: Pottsville vs. Northwestern or Becahi, 2 p.m. at Pates Park. 2A final: North Schuylkill vs, Pine Grove, 1 p.m. at Blue Mountain. The 4Af final, featuring Liberty against either Northampton or Emmaus, 7 p.m. at Pates Park.

TV NEWS ON MAY 30

http://blog.sitcomsonline.com/2012/05/castle-on-tnt-delayed-nick-at-nite-adds.html the TNT start date for reruns of Castle was Thursday, June 7. As of late last week, TNT has delayed the start date for reruns of that popular comedic crime drama. No word yet on when Castle will air on TNT now, but The Mentalist reruns will continue to air on Thursday nights at 9pm and 10pm. In the meantime, viewers can watch Castle reruns on ABC on Mondays at 10pm for the next two weeks (June 4 and 11) before it goes on hiatus until late August. The series will return with brand new episodes on ABC this fall for its fifth season. Castle is a comedic/romantic crime drama starring Nathan Fillion (Firefly, Desperate Housewives) and Stana Katic (Quantum of Solace, TNT's The Librarian: Curse of the Judas Chalice). Also as part of TNT's TV Everywhere rollout, Castle will also be available for online viewing through mobile phones, tablets, computers and other devices as soon s it starts airing on TNT. They will only be allowed to air the first two seasons for now but will be able to air more than just the first two seasons by Fall 2013. The series also heads to weekend broadcast syndication this fall, so check your local listings for times and station as we get closer to the fall! Stay with us for a new premiere date for Castle on TNT! Nick at Nite will premiere its new original primetime series a bit earlier than planned! Nick at Nite adds sizzle to summer weeknights with the original primetime drama Hollywood Heights, kicking off with a special preview beginning Monday, June 11 at 9:00 p.m. The debut episode will also encore every night at 9:00 p.m. (ET/PT) through Friday, June 15, with the series still premiering on Monday, June 18 at 9:00 p.m. (ET/PT) and new episodes airing every weeknight thereafter, as we previously announced. Adapted for a U.S. audience from the wildly popular Mexican telenovela Alcanzar una Estrella, Hollywood Heights follows the journey of a teenage girl whose life changes drastically when she becomes a star and wins the love of her rock and roll idol, and both are tested by setbacks, heartbreak and deception. The first season of the 80-episode series, co-produced with Televisa in association with Sony Pictures Television, will air weeknights at 9 p.m. through October 2012. The special preview week (June 11-15) will have back-to-back episodes of Friends as a lead-in from 8-9pm at a special time. As a result, Yes, Dear will air 10-11pm, while another hour of Friends will follow at 11 leading into a block of George Lopez from 12-2am. This means That '70s Show will not air this week, but the sitcom will be joining sister network TV Land's schedule this coming Friday anyway, so perhaps it will be slowly phased out from Nick. This new schedule will likely remain week of June 18, too, but we don't have that confirmed yet. Nick at Nite also has a Friends week coming up from Monday, June 4 to Friday, June 8 from 8pm-5am ET/PT each night to help promote the premiere of Hollywood Heights the week after. Nick at Nite also has a Father's Day event planned on Sunday, June 17 with My Wife & Kids even making an appearance with George Lopez, Yes Dear and Friends.

Tuesday recap: Frustration for Parkland; desperation for Pen Argyl; hope for Saucon

http://blogs.mcall.com/groller/ FROM KEITH GROLLER Some people wonder why the state softball playoffs aren't expanded to include 32 teams in each bracket instead of 16. That would give District 11 a few more qualifiers, they say. If basketball can have five rounds, why can't softball? All you need is one more round of games? Well, Tuesday is a perfect answer to why district and PIAA officials don't want to expand any softball, or any spring sport. It's hard enough to get the games in as it is now. Besides dodging the rain drops, tournament officials have to worry about proms and graduation ceremonies. There were supposed to be six state semifinal games played on Tuesday. Only one provided a result and I am sure it is a very disheartening, unsatisfying result for Parkland. To a degree, it was probably less than satisfying for Liberty as well. You work hard all year to get to the district semis and then you are deprived of a complete opportunity at ErinWwinning the game. Rules are rules and so on, but you wonder if District 11 should adopt the World Series policy that Major League Baseball went to after the Phillies-Rays fiasco a few years ago and that's insist that all playoff games must go the full distance. (The game started under brighters skies as you can see at the right). It's not the first time this happened. Emmaus beat Easton a few years ago in the district finals in another game that didn't go the full seven. That one felt just as unsatisfying to all concerned. I didn't get the chance to talk to Parkland coach Barry Search after the final decision to call the game was announced on Tuesday night. Knowing Search, I am sure he would have said: "That's the way it goes" and "We had our chances." Still, it's a very disappointing way for a season to end, and in the case of seniors, a career to finish. Had it been 5-2, 7-3 something like that, everybody would have felt better about it. But 3-2 with an inning and half to go, well, it still felt like it was anybody's ballgame. Becahi-Northwestern, Emmaus-Northampton and Palmerton-Pine Grove never got started, but two other games did. And those two have offered surprising results so far. North Schuylkill leads Colonial League champ Pen Argyl 6-2 entering the bottom of the fifth and Saucon Valley holds a 2-1 edge on Pottsville, also in the bottom of the fifth. If any Colonial League team was supposed to make it to a district final it was supposed to be Pen Argyl. We'll see what happens, but those two results add to what was a very strange, messy day in area softball.

Upper Nazareth Township firefighting teens follow in their father's footsteps

http://www.lehighvalleylive.com/nazareth/index.ssf/2012/05/upper_nazareth_firefighting_te.html FROM THE EXPRESS TIMES BY AMANDA GRIESSER For The Express-Times Jeffrey Fassl Jr. and his sister Tricia seem like typical teenagers. Jeffrey, 14, attends Nazareth Area Middle School and enjoys fishing and four-wheeling. Tricia is 16, recently started driving and cheers at Bethlehem Catholic High School. What sets them apart from most other teenagers is their commitment to saving lives. Jeffrey and Tricia are junior volunteer firefighters for the Upper Nazareth Township Fire Department. They have followed in the footsteps of their father, Jeffrey Fassl Sr., who has been a firefighter for 16 years. He's the president of the township fire department. Fassl and his wife, Chris, the fire department secretary, never expected their children to become firefighters. “We can be out and see a lot of tragedy, but we have a lot of family time. And it’s fun,” Fassl said. Jeffrey, Tricia and their father each have a pager that notifies them of emergencies. When they receive a call, they have three minutes to get to the fire station, get in their gear, get in a firetruck and get out the door. “My favorite thing is the adrenaline rush,” Jeffrey Jr. said. “The house rocks when the pagers go off,” his father said with a laugh. Tricia and Jeffrey may not enter buildings to fight fires until they turn 18. They provide exterior support by hooking up fire hoses to hydrants, refilling cylinders in other firefighters’ air packs, cleaning up accident scenes and grabbing the tools needed to control a blaze. They wear the same helmets, gloves, boots and heavy-duty turnout gear as every other firefighter. Of the five junior volunteer firefighters at the station, Tricia has been volunteering for the longest time and has completed the most training. She has received first aid, CPR and hazmat training and completed three modules of fire school through Northampton Community College. She became a state-certified EMT on May 20. Tricia decided to become a volunteer firefighter in order to help the community. “I love to deal with people and help people and know we’re here for them in their worst times,” she said. Jeffrey is the youngest junior volunteer firefighter in the department. He participates in drills at the fire station every Monday night and plans to enroll in fire school at Northampton Community College in the fall. He dreams of one day becoming a firefighter in New York City. “Out there you get to help people more often,” he said.

Miami Dolphins to be the Spotlight of the 2012 Edition of Hard Knocks

http://sportsmediajournal.com/ HBO Sports has announced that the Miami Dolphins will serve as the team for the network’s 2012 production of Hard Knocks. The seven episode Hard Knocks: Training Camp with the Miami Dolphins will begin debut Tuesday, August 7th at 10:00p.m. ET. “We are delighted that HARD KNOCKS will be returning this summer and placing the spotlight on the Miami Dolphins, a venerable franchise that had an exciting off-season activity,” says Ken Hershman, president, HBO Sports in a press release. “This marks the first time that the series has featured a first-year head coach (Joe Philbin) and we are extremely grateful to both Coach Philbin and the entire organization for agreeing to participate. As always, there will be plenty on the line for veterans, free agents and rookies.” “On the 40th anniversary of the greatest season in NFL history–Don Shula’s perfect ’72 Dolphins– it is perfectly fitting that Hard Knocks is heading to Miami to capture the start of a new era for one of the league’s proudest teams,” says NFL Films president Steve Sabol. “After Hard Knocks’ hiatus last summer, I know our team at NFL Films can’t wait to get back on the field.” “We are excited that the premier company in sports filmmaking history, NFL FILMS, and HBO Sports have chosen the Miami Dolphins to appear on their award-winning series Hard Knocks,” said Joe Philbin, head coach of the Miami Dolphins. “We are looking forward to connecting with our many fans across the country as the program chronicles our 2012 training camp. The series will highlight the outstanding men who comprise our team and represent our organization admirably, both on and off the field, as they compete for a coveted position on our roster.” The Hard Knocks series originated in 2001 with the Baltimore Ravens. It returned in 2007 with the Kansas City Chiefs and continued in 2008 with the Dallas Cowboys, 2009 with the Cincinnati Bengals, and 2010 with the New York Jets. Hard Knocks was not produced last season as the end of the lockout prevented HBO from organizing filming of the series.

District 11 softball predictions: Who can handle the heat?

http://blogs.mcall.com/groller/ FROM KEITH GROLLER As we look ahead to tonight's semifinals in District 11 Classes 4A, 3A and 2A, the one thing that comes immediately to mind when you take one step outside is -- who can handle the heat? Remember, these girls play in weekend softball tournaments all summer long, sometimes playing four or five games in one day. Most of them are used to the heat, and yet, hot is still hot and the summer teams are more equipped for the heat with their uniforms, coolers and tents etc. than the high school teams. If the games go extra innings, you definitely could see some teams bothered more than others by the warm temps. Because both Parkland and Emmaus feature two quality pitchers and not just one, you might give the edge to the Trojans and Green Hornets tonight. Last week I thought we'd be looking at an Emmaus-Liberty final, but I didn't like the way the Hurricanes struggled against Pocono Mt. East. Parkland, meanwhile, came out and took care of business, pounding Nazareth. That's a sign that the Trojans remain hungry. So, I am going with (Emmaus 5, Northampton 2) and (Parkland 4, Liberty 3) in the 4A games. But I will admit this, and it's not a copout, these four teams are so evenly matched that any title-game matchup that emerges tonight will not shock me. I just believe that Emmaus has a huge edge playing its home games at Pates Park and Parkland has played the best softball over the second half of the season with the exception of one bad night against Becahi in the LVC semis. In 3A, I think Becahi has its act together, finally, and will get to the finals against Pottsville, which will outlast Saucon Valley in a high-scoring game. Scores? (Becahi 9, Northwestern 3) and (Pottsville 8, Saucon Valley 6). In 2A, I will stay with the top two seeds and league champs, Pen Argyl and Pine Grove, but the Green Knights may have more of a struggle than you'd think. Remember, it took a two-run single by Kassy Beckage for Pen Argyl to beat North Schuylkill for a 2-1 win in last year's semis. It has been a nice season for the Blue Bombers and I give them a puncher's chance against the Cardinals, but junior Pine Grove pitcher Ethel Mae Santai, who has 264 strikeouts in 154 innings, might be too much. Scores? (Pen Argyl 3, North Schuylkill 2) and (Pine Grove 2, Palmerton 1). Let's just hope they get the games played. Late-afternoon thunderstorms are quite possible, unfortunately.

Anthony Recker sent back to Triple-A by the Athletics

http://blogs.mcall.com/groller/ FROM KEITH GROLLER On Monday, the Oakland Athletics reinstated third baseman Brandon Inge from the 15-day disabled list and optioned catcher Anthony Recker, a Catasauqua High graduate, to Triple-A Sacramento. Inge was batting .227 with four home runs and 17 RBI in 11 games with the A's when he was placed on the DL May 17 with a strained right groin. Inge, a longtime fixture with the Tigers, started the season with Detroit and went 2-for-20 in nine games before he was released. Recker was batting .129 in 13 games with Oakland with a double, four walks, three runs scored and 13 strikeouts in 31 at-bats. Recker, who will turn 29 on Aug. 29, played in five games for Oakland in 2011 after being promoted in August. He made his debut at Yankee Stadium and got his first hit at Fenway Park. In 18 MLB games, Recker is hitting .146 (7-for-48) with six runs, two doubles and eight walks. He is still seeking his first career RBI and home run. Oakland manager Bob Melvin said on mlb.com: "Recker wasn't getting an opportunity to be successful for a guy that's used to playing a good portion of the time," Melvin said. "During the season, there will be times where some of the role players will need some at-bats, and that was the case with him."

TV NEWS ON MAY 27

http://blog.sitcomsonline.com/2012/05/final-week-of-2011-12-tv-ratings-and.html 2011-12 Week 36 TV Ratings (final three nights of the season average, Mon-Wed): Households: #1. Fox 7.9 rating/12.6 share; #2. ABC 7.2/11.6; #3. CBS 4.5/7.2; #4. NBC 3.9/6.3; #5. The CW 0.4/0.7 Total Viewers: #1. Fox 13.51 million; #2. ABC 10.94 million; #3. CBS 6.75 million; #4. NBC 6.43 million; #5. The CW 0.64 million. Adults 18-49: #1. Fox. 4.2 rating/12.0 share; #2. ABC 2.6/7.3; #3. NBC 2.1/5.9; #4. CBS 1.5/4.3; #5 . The CW 0.3/0.8 Week 36 (May 21-27) Analysis: Week 36 is the final week of the season but it is only the first three days of the week, so really there is only 35 1/2 weeks during a TV season. For the final three nights of the season, Fox had the commanding lead thanks to American Idol. ABC was in second place across the board lead by its finales of Dancing and Modern Family. CBS was mainly in repeats , with only one hour of new programming only, so it had to settle for a distant third in HH/viewers but fourth in adults 18-49. NBC was fourth in HH/viewers, even losing to repeats on CBS, but they did beat them in adults 18-49. As for last week, week 35, Fox beat CBS by a tenth for the 18-49 crown again, while CBS again took home HH/total viewers. ABC was second in HH/viewers, but third in 18-49 (only a tenth behind CBS for second), while Fox was third in HH/viewers. And that left NBC fourth across the board again. NBC did finish the 2011-12 season in third place in 18-49 thanks to the Super Bowl. Without it, they would be down two tenths and back in fourth. Thanks to that bonus they were in third, but in all likelihood, barring a huge hit, they will be back in fourth next season. Fox won the season in adults 18-49, followed by CBS, NBC and ABC. On Monday, it was NBC edging ABC by a tenth and Fox by two tenths. First, on ABC, Dancing with the Stars: The Finals started it off from 8-9pm doing a first place 16.84 million and a 2.9 18-49 rating, up three tenths from previous week when it aired 8-9:30pm. From 9-11pm, The Bachelorette did a solid 7.53 million and a 2.4 18-49 rating, off just two tenths from previous week's 90-minute premiere. For CBS, How I Met Your Mother was a repeat for some reason (the second year in a row CBS has done repeats the last week of the season) and did 4.06 million and a 1.3 18-49 rating. A repeat of 2 Broke Girls followed doing 4.62 million and a 1.6 18-49 rating, building from its lead-in. A repeat of Two and a Half Men followed at 9 with 7.23 million and a 2.0 rating, the best of the block as usual even though it seems below normal for a repeat. A repeat of Mike & Molly was next and did 6.29 million and a 1.6 18-49 rating, which is serviceable. At 10, Hawaii Five-0 was preempted for a new Clash of the Commercials special doing 5.96 million and only a 1.3 18-49 rating, which is down from last season's special. Fox started off the night with a House retrospective special doing 6.27 million and a 2.1 rating, up two tenths from the season finale of Bones the previous week. Then at 9, it was the series finale of House doing 8.72 million and a 2.9 rating, up seven tenths from previous week. Not bad, but no where near what the series has done in the past. NBC started it off with America's Got Talent at 8 and did 9.66 million and a 3.2 18-49 rating, which was down four tenths from previous week's two-hour premiere. Then from 9-11pm, NBC premiered the summer series America Ninja Warrior doing a solid 6.2 million and a 2.4 18-49 rating. It did better than the way more expensive Smash finale. The CW aired a repeat of One Tree Hill and did just 0.57 million and a 0.3 18-49 rating. Another repeat airing followed with 0.53 million and a 0.2 rating. Probably one of the last network airings of this series ever, if not the last one. On Tuesday, it was Fox with the win. NCIS: LA at 8 started it off at a special time with a repeat doing 7.51 million and a 1.2 18-49 rating. Then two hour of repeats of NCIS at a special time did 9.17 million and a 1.6 18-49 rating at 9 and 9.34 million and a 1.8 18-49 rating at 10. ABC aired an encore of the previous night's Dancing with the Stars: The Finals at 8 and did 8.83 million and a 1.3 18-49, which beat the one-hour of Cougar Town the previous week. From 9-11pm, the live Dancing with the Stars: The Finale did 17.75 million and a 3.3 18-49 rating, up eleven tenths from previous week, as we crowned Donald Driver the season 14 champion. The lowest rated finale for this show, but still solid enough. Fox aired part one of the American Idol finale and it did 14.85 million and a 4.4 18-49 rating, great numbers but no where near what it was doing in the past. It's almost back to earth. At 9, the season finale of Glee did 7.46 million and a 2.9 18-49 rating, up four tenths from previous week. This show is no longer a big hit already. NBC was next with the an encore of America's Got Talent at 8 doing 5.24 million and a 1.7 18-49 rating in an hour of many repeats except for Idol. An all-new episode followed at 9 and did 9.44 million and a 3.3 18-49 rating, down a tenth from previous week's two-hour Tuesday premiere. At 10, a 20th Anniversary of Dateline special did 4.98 million and a 1.6 18-49 rating, on par with previous week's Fashion Star finale. Yet NBC is bringing that reality series back? The CW had a repeat of of Hart of Dixie doing only 730,000 viewers and a 0.2 18-49 rating, in its new time period next fall. Then at 9pm, a new episode of LA Complex did just 450,000 viewers and a 0.2 18-49 rating, on par with the previous week. What a disaster! Wednesday it was all Fox with the Idol finale. First, CBS started the night off with two comedy repeats. The Big Bang Theory aired at 8 doing 5.63 million and a 1.6 18-49 rating, up five tenths from previous week's comedy encore. At 8:30, a repeat of Two and a Half Men did 4.38 million and a 1.2 18-49 rating, only up a tenth from previous week's comedy encore despite a higher lead-in. Then at 9, a repeat of Criminal Minds did 6.41 million and a 1.6 18-49 rating. Another repeat followed at 10 doing a similar 6.25 million and a 1.6 18-49 rating. ABC was all-new for its Laugh On comedy block, as the season finale of The Middle started it off doing 6.52 million and a 2.0 18-49 rating, up a tenth from previous week as it could be better but spring has hampered it a bit. A Modern Family encore at 8:30pm did 6.0 million and a 2.1 18-49 rating, up three tenths from previous week's Suburgatory season finale. The mega hit Modern Family was next at 9pm with its season finale and it did 10.07 million and a 4.1 18-49 rating, which was up two tenths from previous week. At 9:30pm, the season finale of the hilarious Don't Trust the B---- In Apartment 23 did 5.6 million and a 2.4 18-49 rating, up a solid five tenths from previous week. At 10pm the addicting Revenge season finale did 7.85 million and a 2.4 18-49 rating, up four tenths from previous week. WOW! What a finale! The series moves to Sundays at 9 next fall and I expect a solid upswing for this promising series. Fox aired American Idol season finale from 8-10:06pm doing 21.49 million and a 6.4 18-49 rating, of course up from previous week by a large amount but its lowest rated finale since season one. NBC opened the night with a new Betty White's Off Their Rockers doing 5.39 million and a 1.5 18-49 rating, up a tenth from previous week. Another all-new episode followed at 8:30pm and did a similar 5.28 million and a 1.5 18-49 rating, down a tenth from previous week. Will return next season in mid-season again. At 9pm, a repeat of Law & Order: SVU at 9pm did 3.66 million and a 0.9 18-49, up a tenth from previous week. And at 10pm, the season finale of Law & Order: SVU did 7.16 million and a 2.0 18-49 rating, up three tenths from previous week. The CW had a repeat of Top Model start it off at 8pm doing 740,000 viewers and a 0.3 18-49 rating, down a tenth week-to-week. A new America's Next Top Model followed at 9 and did just 830,000 viewers and a 0.4 18-49 rating, down a tenth from previous week. Starting from Thursday on, the summer season started! So we won't do an analysis, but stay tuned all summer to see how your favorite network sitcoms are doing--repeat or not! Week 36 How the Sitcoms Did Last Sunday Sitcoms (counts for Week 35 -- May 14-20) The Simpsons (Fox) - The season finale at 8pm did 4.82 million and just a 2.1 18-49 rating, which is below normal but up two tenths from previous week. Not good. Lowest rated finale ever it seems for this show. At 7pm, a repeat did 2.36 million and a 1.0 18-49 rating, which was up a tenth from previous week. The Cleveland Show (Fox) - The season finale at 7:30pm did 3.01 million and a 1.3 18-49 rating, on par with previous week. Way too low. Bob's Burgers (Fox) - The season finale at 8:30pm did 3.57 million and a 1.7 18-49 rating, which is not too good and down a tenth from previous week despite its lead-in going up. This show really should not be back. Family Guy (Fox) - The one-hour season finale did 5.35 million and a 2.6 18-49 rating, for the best of the block and up two tenths from previous week. Lowest rated finale for this show ever. American Dad! (Fox) - preempted. Monday Sitcoms How I Met Your Mother (CBS) - A repeat (yes in sweeps) did 4.06 million and a 1.3 18-49 rating. Seems low. 2 Broke Girls (CBS) - A repeat of this comedy did 4.62 million and a 1.6 18-49 rating, growing from its lead-in. Will it be ready at 9pm to anchor the night? I don't think total viewers will be as strong as Men. Two and a Half Men (CBS) - A repeat did 7.23 million and a 2.0 18-49 rating. This show usually repeats better. We shall see how it does this summer. Mike & Molly (CBS) - 6.29 million and a 1.6 18-49 rating for a repeat is OK. Tuesday Sitcoms Last Man Standing (ABC) - preempted. Cougar Town (ABC) - preempted, one-hour finale this Tuesday. New Girl (Fox) - preempted. Wednesday Sitcoms The Middle (ABC) - The season finale did 6.52 million and a 2.0 18-49 rating, up a tenth from previous week. Should bounce back to high 2's/low 3's in fall. The Big Bang Theory (CBS) - A special repeat did 5.63 million and a 1.6 18-49 rating at 8. Solid! Suburgatory (ABC) - preempted. Two and a Half Men (CBS) - A special repeat at 8:30pm did just 4.38 million and a 1.2 18-49 rating. Losing steam from its lead-in. Weird. Modern Family (ABC) - The season finale of this mega hit did 10.07 million and a 4.1 18-49 rating, up two tenths from previous week's season low. Don't Trust the B---- In Apartment 23 (ABC) - The season finale did 5.6 million and a 2.4 18-49 rating, up five tenths from previous week. Pretty impressive against the final half-hour of Idol finale. Thursday Sitcoms The Big Bang Theory (CBS) - A repeat at 8 did 8.27 million and a 2.3 18-49 rating, off two tenths from previous week. Should stay above a 2 all summer. Rules of Engagement (CBS) - A repeat did 6.12 million and a 1.7 18-49 rating. Community (NBC) - preempted. 30 Rock (NBC) - preempted The Office (NBC) 2 airings - A repeat at 8 did just 2.26 million and a 0.7 18-49 rating. Another repeat followed at 8:30 doing an embarrassing 1.86 million and a 0.7 18-49 rating. Parks and Recreation (NBC) - preempted. Friday Sitcoms None. Saturday Sitcoms How to Be a Gentleman (CBS) 2 episodes - Two burn-off airings did nothing. Airing tonight (Sunday) are no comedies. Summing it up. Airings of Modern Family, Two and a Half Men, The Big Bang Theory, 2 Broke Girls were impressive for the week. Everything else was OK (such as The Middle, Don't Trust the B---- In Apartment 23) or just plain old terrible (such as The Office).
