Pennsylvania lawmakers to consider redrawn congressional boundaries

FROM THE EXPRESS TIMES

Pennsylvania lawmakers today are expected to consider an amendment that would redraw Pennsylvania's congressional districts and keep the Lehigh Valley whole.

The amendment is the Democrats' answer to a Republican-sponsored bill that passed the state Senate last week and also is up now for consideration in the House.

The Republican proposal would move all or part of 23 Northampton County municipalities out of the 15th Congressional District headed by Republican U.S. Rep. Charlie Dent and into the 17th Congressional District led by U.S. Rep. Timothy Holden, a Democrat from Schuylkill County. Easton, Nazareth and much of the Slate Belt shift into the 17th District, under the plan.

Today is the second-to-last of the state House's scheduled voting sessions before legislators take their traditional holiday break. Votes are expected to commence later this afternoon, lawmakers said.

The House State Government Committee approved the Republican-crafted boundary lines in a 15-8 vote Friday.

The Republican plan has been criticized by Democrats, Lehigh Valley business leaders and groups such as Common Cause and the League of Women Voters.

House Democratic Whip Mike Hanna says his party's congressional map protects voter interests by minimizing splits in counties and municipalities, emphasizing compact districts and ensuring traditional communities of interest are together.

Republicans acknowledge their map seeks to protect incumbent U.S. House members, since those are the people already picked by voters.
