The Nazareth Area School Board is seeking a candidate to fill the seat of late board member Thomas Maher.
Maher, 61, died Nov. 30. He ran unopposed in the Nov. 8 general election and was scheduled to be sworn into a four-year term at this past Monday’s school board meeting.
Maher, a certified public accountant, joined the school board in 1999, later serving as treasurer and chairman of the audit and finance committee. He also served on various other district committees.
The board is seeking someone to represent Region 2, which covers the eastern district of Upper Nazareth Township and all of Lower Nazareth Township.
Schools Superintendent Victor Lesky said interested candidates should send a letter of interest by Dec. 20 to vlesky@nazarethasd.org. Following the deadline, Lesky will request resumes and answered questionnaires of candidates. The deadline for that information will be Jan. 3.
Lesky said he has received four letters and three phone calls requesting more information.
School board members have called a special meeting for Jan. 4 to interview candidates who meet the requirements. Lesky said interviews with each candidate will be open to the public, lasting about 15 minutes each.
The board plans to choose the next school board member at the end of the Jan. 4 meeting. Lesky said that's also the final day to meet the 30-day state deadline in filling a vacant school board seat.
That person will be able to run in the next municipal election against anyone else who may file to run. Whomever wins the election would finish the remaining time on Maher's original term.
Lesky said finding the proper candidate to fill Maher’s shoes will be difficult, describing the late board member as “principled.” He said Maher was someone who understood his obligation to provide students an education that enables success without burdening citizens financially.
“Tom knew that all spending had parameters and it was not that he wanted to deny any student the opportunity to succeed. It was the fact that he wanted to ensure that all students had the resources necessary to be the best that they could be, that inspired his call to the board for fiscal responsibility,” Lesky said Tuesday.
“He would never waiver from his beliefs and he always gave the board of education a point of view to seriously consider in their deliberations," Lesky said. "Tom's contributions to the district will be sorely missed and the students of the Nazareth Area School District will no longer be able to benefit from his expertise.”
Lesky then added, “I will miss Tom both personally and professionally and make a promise that as long as I am able, I will continue to ensure that Tom's legacy continues within the Nazareth Area School District.”
Meanwhile, Chris Miller was sworn into his four-year seat representing Region 1, which covers Bushkill Township, Tatamy and a portion of west Palmer Township.
“I would like to thank those citizens who voted for me so that I could obtain a seat on the Nazareth School Board,” Miller said Tuesday. “Next to providing an exceptional education for our children is the need to do it in a frugal manner.”
