Easton Area High School wrestling team advances four after the first day of the Reno Tournament

FROM THE EXPRESS TIMES

The Easton Area High School wrestling team is in third place after the first day of the 17th annual Reno Tournament of Champions.

The Red Rovers amassed 93 points and trail Poway, Calif. (127.5) and Union (102.5) of Tulsa, Okla. The Red Rovers advanced four wrestlers into today's quarterfinals and four are still alive for third place in the consolations.

"This is a great learning experience for us," coach Steve Powell said. "We have some inexperienced guys in the lineup this year and they are really doing well."

Sophomore Anthony Parisi (106), seeing his first varsity action, won three times to reach the quarterfinals. He started by pinning McQueen's Austin Sweet in 4:00, followed by a 7-4 decision over 10th-seeded Christian Root of Temecula Valley and a 4-1 victory over seventh-seeded Graham Godfrey of Union 4-1.

Evan DiSora, seeded fourth at 145, beat Chico's Pang Lee by an 8-0 major decision and pinned Loenel Mendez of Temecula Valley in 42 seconds. He then topped 11th-seeded Jesse Carlisle of Maple Mountain 9-4.

Peter Stanley, seeded fifth at 126, went 3-0 by recording a pin over Skyview's TJ Checketts in 1:42, defeating Josh Cortez of Temecula Valley 3-2 and pinning Tye Bootnjer of Foothill PC in 5:52.

Second-seeded Tyler Greene (195) received a bye into the second round where he pinned Grandview's Max Moore in 1:08. He then won by a 16-1 technical fall in 3:04 over Austine Gonzalez of Wasilla.

Still alive in the consolations are Mason Angstadt (113), Robbie Rizzolino (132), Mark Misczenski (138) and Dyvon Gibson (160).

Angstadt received a bye into the second round before beating Temecula Valley's Frank Sandavol 6-2 before losing to third-seeded Riley Connolly by fall.

The sixth seeded Rizzolino was dominant in the first two rounds with a 13-5 major decision over Justin Soto of Sanger and a 21-6 technical fall in 4:00 over Wyatt Chism of Reno. Rizzolino then lost 5-2 to 11th-seeded Paul Fox of Gilroy.

Jagger Miller (170) received a forfeit in the first round before recording a second-period fall over Wooster's Jake McAlvain. He lost to Amador Valley's Richard Nevearez in the third round and then was eliminated in the consolations.

Easton's defending PIAA 140-pound state champion Mitch Minotti accompanied the team to Reno but is not participating, according to Powell, because the senior is still recuperating from offseason shoulder surgery. He could return to the lineup next week against Allen.
