Behind Tyler Boyd’s 221 yards rushing, the Clairton Bears (16-0) won their record third straight title in four appearances, 35-19 over Southern Columbia at Hersheypark Stadium for the Class A Championship, Saturday afternoon.
With this win, Clairton would win their record 47th straight game, passing Don Bosco Prep (NJ).
Boyd accounted for both of his team’s touchdowns in the second half to break the game open in the fourth quarter.
The Bears lead 21-19 with 5:54 left in the fourth quarter, when Boyd would run to the left side of his line, seeing no room, he would cut back and scamper 78 yards for his first of two touchdowns in the game, for a 27-19 lead.
Three minutes later, Boyd ran up the middle on a 68 yard run to extend the Bears’ lead, 35-19.
Clairton scored the final touchdown of the game, and they also scored the first touchdown of the game.
Bears’ running back Terrish Webb (3 catches, 167, 2 TDs) scored on the first offensive play of the game, bursting 88 yards for the score, for a Bears’ 8-0 lead.
Southern Columbia (14-2), hoping to earn a record 7 P.I.A.A. State Titles, answered the Bears score in the second quarter, with a Tyler Levan (21 carries, 70 yards) 5 yard touchdown run. The two point conversion failed, with the Bears leading 8-6.
Exactly one minute later in the second quarter, Webb scored his second touchdown of the game on a 65 reception from quarterback Capri Thompson. Two point conversion failed – Clairton 14-6.
With nearly two minutes left until halftime, Tigers’ running back Matt Moore (16 carries, 136 yards, 2 TDs) hit pay dirt on a 3 yard run. The Tigers were within two, 14-12.
As the half was nearing the end, Boyd was looking to pass the ball on a halfback pass play, but nobody was open. So, he would run 55 yards to the Tigers 1 yard line. Bears’ Reuben Kelley would finish off the drive, for a Bears’ lead 21-12.
On a 12 play, 44 yard drive, as time expired in the third quarter, Moore would score his second touchdown of the game, from 5 yards out. This would be the closest the Tigers would get, 21-19.
In the first half, Boyd would rush for 71 yards, he gained 147 in the second half. In fact, Clairton earned 3 first downs in the second half, accounting for 10 total.
Clairton would outrush Southern Columbia 251-161, and out-pass the Tigers as well, 185-97.
Four of Clairton’s five drives would take, at most, 3 plays to score on. A 6 play drive ending with a Kelley touchdown, was the Bears’ long scoring drive.
Total yardage for the game: Clairton 436; Southern Columbia 258.
The Bears sacked Tiger’s quarterback Brad Fegley 6 times, 5 times in the second half. The Tigers struggled on third down, going 5 for 18.
