Valley refs to officiate state soccer title game

FROM THE MORNING CALL

Three Lehigh Valley soccer referees have been selected to officiate the PIAA Class 3A boys soccer championship game at 5 p.m. Saturday at Hersheypark Stadium in Hershey.

Veteran referees Pete Csongradi, Milt Martinez and Mort Mikkelsen, all members of the Lehigh Valley Soccer Officials Association, will work the state final between undefeated District 1 champion Conestoga (23-0-1) and once-beaten District 7 champion Upper St. Clair (20-1-2). The game will be telecast live on the PCN Network.

This is the first state final for each of them, and the second year in a row that a Lehigh Valley crew has been selected for the state championship game.

Hersheypark Conestoga knocked off Council Rock North in penalty kicks on Tuesday. Council Rock North eliminated Emmaus last week in double overtime, then shocked returning state champion Hempfield 1-0 last Saturday.

Upper St. Clair edged previously unbeaten Allerdice, the District 8 champion, in the opening round of the playoff. Upper St. Clair has not given up a goal in regulation or overtime play throughout the PIAA tournament, but went to penalty kicks to edge State College 1-0 (7-6 in PKs) in the Western semifinal.
