Matt Millen out of NFL Thursday Night broadcast booth

FROM KEITH GROLLER

The NFL Network has just announced that Brad Nessler and Mike Mayock would be its new annoucning team for Thursday Night Football beginning in November.

Whitehall native Matt Millen had been in the booth for the past two seasons, serving as color analyst, first working alone with Bob Papa in 2009 and with Joe Theismann joining them last year.

Papa and Theismann are obviously not back either, but The NFL Network did acknowledge them in their release saying that Papa will continue "to be a valuable member of NFL Network’s team. He will continue to contribute reports on NFL Network’s Sunday NFL GameDay shows as well as have roles on additional NFL Network programming.

The release said that Theismann will return to NFL Network’s Playbook and other specials.

There was no mention of Millen.

I haven't spoken with Millen, but heard from someone close to him that he expected this would be coming.

Millen is still expected to do college games for ESPN and do analyst work on the Monday night pregame and postgame shows.

The NFL Network held a teleconference late in the morning on Thursday and Senior Vice President of Production and Programming Mark Quenzel called Mayock "a rising star."

Mayock was evidently selected before Nessler and Quenzel said he was looking for the right chemistry between the announcers and thought Nessler, who worked previously with Mayock, would be the best choice.

The sixth season of Thursday Night Football on The NFL Network begins Nov. 10 when Oakland visits San Diego.
