Liberty loses to Pocono Mt. West, leaving LVC 0-3 at the LV Hoop Group Showcase

FROM KEITH GROLLER

Pocono Mountain West got 23 points from Tynell Fortune, including a stellar 15-for-16 effort at the foul line and held off Liberty 49-45 in the final game of the 16th annual Lehigh Valley Hoop Group Showcase at parkland on Sunday.

Earlier, Parkland lost to Paul VI Catholic 58-39 of Fairfax, Va., and Allen fell to Gill St. Bernard's of Gladstone, New Jersey, 61-53.

It was not a good day for Lehigh Valley Conference members in the event that attracted close to 1,000 fans.

This is one of the top attractions of the high school boys basketball season, and St. Benedict's and Penn Wood put on a good show in the only contest on the four-game card that did not feature a Lehigh Valley team. St. Benedict's won 69-60.

But the talent was on display all day.

The Trojans (7-9) were done in by a remarkable shooting display by Paul VI's Patrick Holloway, who had eight 3-pointers in scoring 34 points. Holloway's total was second only to Emmaus graduate and current DeSales player Brian Hunter, who has the event record with 38 points against Liberty in 2007.

Zach Muhr led Parkland with 13 points and was named his team's MVP.

Allen (12-3) also ran into some hot hands.

Gill St. Bernard's guards Jaren Sina and Alex Mitola combined for 47 points, including 11 3-pointers.

Sina, a sophomore, has already orally committed to Alabama. He showed why he's headed to the SEC with a stellar 28-point effort.

Allen cut a 12-point deficit to 53-48 with 3:35 left, but couldn't get any closer. Sina closed the door with four free throws in the final 26 seconds.

Gill St. Bernard's (15-2) is the fourth ranked team in New Jersey. Allen fell to 12-3.
