Dec 3, 2009 3:43 pm US/Eastern Phillies Sign Placido Polanco
PHILADELPHIA (CBS 3) ―
Vice President & General Manager Ruben Amaro Jr. announced Thursday the Phillies have signed infielder Placido Polanco.
Polanco, 34, signed a three-year, $18 million contract.
Polanco hit .285 last season with 31 doubles, 10 home runs and 72 RBI in 153 games for the Detroit Tigers. With runners in scoring position, he batted .310 and in 16 games against the National League, he hit .298. Among all active major league players, Polanco has the second-best career strikeout/plate appearance ratio at 15.39. Only the Los Angeles Dodgers' Juan Pierre has a better ratio (18.0).
This will be his second stint with the Phillies.
In 2002, he was acquired by the club as part of the trade with the St. Louis Cardinals for third baseman Scott Rolen. In 297 games with the Phillies from 2002-05, Polanco hit .297 with 38 home runs, 160 RBI and 23 stolen bases.
"We're very happy to have Placido back in a Phillies uniform," said Amaro. "He's a professional hitter who will enhance our lineup. As a Gold Glove infielder, we're very confident that he will make a smooth transition back to third base. Polly also gives us some added versatility at second base if and when Chase needs a rest."
