Lifetime's "deliciously dirty" series Devious Maids returns tonight (April 20) for a second season airing Sundays at 10:00pm and we have just watched that season opener. In the episode, "An Ideal Husband," three months have passed since we last saw our characters. Without any major spoilers, Marisol (Ana Ortiz) finds a new love, while Peri tries to keep Rosie (Dania Ramirez) and Spence (Grant Show) apart as Zoila (Judy Reyes) discovers through Genevieve (Susan Lucci) that Valentina (Edy Ganem) is back from Africa, while Carmen (Roselyn Sanchez) and Alejandro settle in to their fake relationship.
In the style of Desperate Housewives (also created by Marc Cherry), we have a new mystery that will play out this season and Marisol finds herself right in the middle of it again, but this time she doesn't know anything about it. All of our favorite maids and their employers are back (well, minus the Stappords), but we also have new blood in Beverly Hills that will play into the season's mystery. The new mystery is very compelling and you'll want to know what happened 15 years ago (1999). The premiere of course brings the mystery, but we still have the comedic aspect that this show did so well with in the first season (in particular characters like Rosie, Odessa and The Powells). And speaking of the Powells (Rebecca Wisocky and Tom Irwin), they are always a pleasure to watch and they have to deal with a crisis in the premiere that forces them to hire a...bodyguard! Funny! New maid Opal might be even creepier than Mr. Powell, if that's even possible. Executive producer Eva Longoria directs the premiere and did an amazing job with it bringing her comedic timing that she mastered on Desperate Housewives. We have a lot of twists and turns, but along the way the premiere has laughs and a lot of heart as well. It's just fun and compelling episode, with a great mystery. You'll want to watch it live tonight at 10|9c on Lifetime because this show will be the talk at the water-cooler Monday morning. No sophomore slump here!
