Stamford, Conn, - February 5, 2014 - NBCUniversal’s coverage of the XXII Olympic Winter Games in Sochi begins Thursday, at 8 p.m. ET on NBC with men’s and women’s snowboard slopestyle and team figure skating, which are both debuting in the Olympics for the first time, as well as women’s moguls.
This will mark the first time that NBC will air Olympic primetime coverage prior to the Opening Ceremony. On Friday, the Opening Ceremony can be seen exclusively on NBC, beginning at 7:30 p.m. ET.
NBCOlympics.com and the
NBC Sports Live Extra app will allow cable, satellite and telco customers to live stream more than 1,000 exclusive hours of Sochi Olympics content, including all sports, all competition and all medal events. It all begins with live streaming coverage of Men’s Snowboard Slopestyle at 1 a.m. ET.
The NBC Olympics Highlights and Results app, will be home to up-to-date TV and online streaming schedules, live results, athlete profiles and replays of the Games’ most memorable moments. In addition, through the “Primetime Companion” section, the app will serve as the signature second-screen tool for NBC’s nightly primetime coverage.

- Figure Skating Team Event - Men’s and Pairs’ Short Program: For the first time in Olympic history, figure skaters of all four disciplines - men, ladies, pairs and ice dancing - compete in a team format, representing the 10 countries with the strongest all-around squads. The first athletes to take the ice in Sochi for the men’s short program include four-time U.S. champion Jeremy Abbott, three-time Olympic medalist Yevgeny Plushenko of Russia and three-time world champion Patrick Chan of Canada. In the pairs’ short program, reigning world champions Tatyana Volosozhar andMaksim Trankov of Russia will face two-time U.S. championsMarissa Castelli and Simon Shnapir.
- Snowboarding - Men’s and Women’s Slopestyle Competition: Slopestyle, a new judged event in which riders perform tricks and high-flying jumps over a downhill course, makes its debut in Sochi, promising to bring to the Games the same excitement that has characterized snowboard halfpipe. The men’s event will feature a trio of high-flying Canadians, including 20-year-old phenom Mark McMorris. In the women’s event, 23-year-old Jamie Anderson of South Lake Tahoe has long been the leading figure and is favored to win the event’s first Olympic gold.
- Women’s Freestyle Skiing - Moguls Competition: Hannah Kearney begins her attempt to become her sport’s first repeat champion tonight. Since winning gold in Vancouver, Kearney has dominated women’s moguls, capturing the 2013 world title and the moguls World Cup title the past three seasons. The U.S. has a strong team behind Kearney, including Vancouver OlympianHeather McPhie.
